ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
2007-2008 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Participated in Scholastic Achievement Foundation Golf Tournament
to provide Scholarships for worthy high school seniors in Palm Beach
County.
- Your President and President-elect along with their wives attended
the Palm Beach County Scholastic Achievement Dinner at the Breakers to
award the Rotary Club of Delray Beach's endowed Scholarship to an
Atlantic High School senior.
- Sponsored the "Service Above Self" Award for the 11th consecutive
year honoring a member of our community who lives their life putting
Service Above Self. The award is presented in November with a luncheon
at Old School Square preceded by a presentation of a brick in the
south walkway. This year's recipient was Ernie Simon.
- Held a Holiday Party at Delray Beach Golf Club in early December
attended by 57 people including our District Governor Phil Lustig and
his wife Peg.
- Bestowed Honorary Memberships upon our Mayor, Rita Ellis and also
the President of the Chamber of Commerce William "Bill" Wood at a club
luncheon.
- Ran a successful "Adopt-a Family" project for Christmas whereby
our fellow Rotarians donated money to provide a Happy and Merry
Christmas to a family who otherwise would not have had one.
- Ran a successful Holiday Wreath project netting the club over
$250.
- Added one new Paul Harris Society member and 14 new Paul Harris
fellows.
- Sponsored an Ambassadorial Scholarship student, Miss Christine
Dombrowsky, who is studying in Buenos Aires,Argentina from
3/7/08-12/7/08. Christina keeps us up-to-date on her adventures
through her blog www.christinadombrowsky.com.
- We researched and passed a new club Constitution and By-Laws to
comply with Rotary International.
- We also researched and passed a new Strategic Plan for the Rotary
Club of Delray Beach-A Plan which should be updated and looked at
yearly by the Board of Directors for changes/updates.
- Raised $532 for the Souper Bowl of Caring with proceeds given to
our local Community Food Pantry.
- Sponsored for the 55th year (only original sponsor left) the Delray
Beach Rotary Little League team. We participated in opening and
closing ceremonies.
- Granted ten $1000 scholarships to Atlantic High Seniors attending
college.
- We combined all of our Fund Accounts into one account at Merrill
Lynch in Delray Beach so we can keep a better handle on what is going
on with our investments. We also, under the guidance of Mr. Wayne
Brockney, have upgraded our accounting software to allow us to add all
of our budgeted items and have an accurate accounting of where we are
financially week-to-week.
- Started a new ongoing project with The Achievement Center for
Children and Families which is a Reading/Crafts/Homework Day on the
last Thursday of each month for one hour in the morning and one hour
in the afternoon.
- Added a photo album to our club website.
- Chartered Venture Scouts Group #303, a co-ed group of youngsters
aged 14-21 of the Boy Scouts of America.
- Donated $500 to the Osceola District, Boy Scouts of America and an
additional $125 to provide backpacks for needy scouts attending scout
camp.
- Sponsored a team in the spring and fall seasons of The Miracle
League, a baseball league for handicapped children.
- Contributed $1000 to finalize our $5000 commitment to the Delray
Beach Public Library for The Rotary Reading Room.
- Ran a small yet successful coupon book sales project netting the
club $220 profit.
- Once again ran our booth at the Delray Affair which raised $3500
profit for a weekend project.
- Distributed over 800 Dictionaries to Third Graders with the help
of Dictionary Dog.
- Ran two successful Habitat for Humanity days helping with the
construction of two homes-one in Boynton Beach where we had 14
volunteers installing a sprinkler system and one in Delray Beach where
we had 6 volunteers moving dirt, cutting wood, and trying our best to be
construction workers.
- Ran for the first time a "Cash" Raffle where we netted over $3000
to our club.
- Ran one of our members favorites "Bingo Night" netting the club
$1000 for one nights efforts.
- Raised money for a fellow member who was paralyzed from a car
accident. $2400 and counting so far.
- Raised $350 for District 6930 building a new park in
Nassau, Bahamas.
- Had two of our members attend the District Conference in the
Bahamas-one of whom was sworn in as our new District Governor
Mrs. Betsy Owen, whom we are all very proud of and Sue Miller who
attended as our Club Representative.
- Collected 35 pairs of old glasses which Dr. Stefani Martin donated
in our name to a charity which fixes them and uses them to provide
glasses for those who otherwise could not afford them.
- Updated our Club Directory
- Incorporated a Bulletin Board at the entrance to the meeting to
inform club members of the speaker of the day and upcoming
projects/events.
- Increased contributions to the Rotary Foundation to well over $100
per member.
- We had four of our members attend the International Presidents
Membership Seminar in Ft. Lauderdale and we also had two of our
members attend Phase One of the Rotary Leadership Institute.
- Helped sponsor and house GSE team as we have done in the
past.
- Two of our past Presidents are serving our District with Nancy
Owens serving our District as Assistant Governor and Leo Phillips
serving as District Governor Elect.
- Even after losing three members to death and seven others to
moving, etc. we were able to finish the year at +1 in membership.
