DELRAY BEACH ROTARY CLUB

Former President Emmett Gumm presided over his last meeting as president
of Delray Beach Rotary Club. (I think I heard a sigh of
relief.) I did hear him say that he would enjoy attending the
meetings from the other side of the table. Bruce Galloway paid a
monetary tribute to him, for his work this year. Emmett, we thank
you for your year of service. Now, go enjoy your duty as Assistant
District Governor.

President Pat Archer, it is now your reign, show them you have "the
right stuff." I know Pat has lots of great plans for our club
for the coming year.

Bill Adams gave a beautiful "Rotary" invocation. Jimmy
Weatherspoon, no longer under the weather, led our singing. He also
is celebrating 33 years of marriage; congratulations to you and
Marian. Bruce Williams, again we thank you for your lovely
music.

Ernie Simon inducted Georgina Kerr-Jarrett as Secretary, and Jess Sowards
as Treasurer. (They were unable to attend last week's
installation.)

We had Lyn Huckle and Bill Talen doing make ups; we thank you. Dr.
Janus Styperek presented the club with a banner he received from a
Louisville, KY Rotary Club, who has 500 members; wow!

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave a very positive stock market report. The
Dow was up 98 points; the S&P up 10 points; NASDAQ up 6 points. Her
quote: " it's a good day on Wall Street. She also held the
ticket for the "green hat" drawing. Since she did not
win, the pot is $179.50+.

Ernie Simon, Sergeant at Arms, squeezed out $80.00 for the day.
Ernie, you did well for a small crowd.

Pat Archer introduced our guest speakers for today. They were
Johnny Pun (who speaks four languages fluently) and Fred Glass; both
Community Service Officers, Community Patrol, for the Delray Police
Department. These officers are to be commended for their dedication
to this project.

These two officers are part of a program called YETC. They deal
with a locale of young people, mostly in a Haitian community, working
with them, helping teach them skills, and a trade. At the present
time, they are awaiting a vote from the school board, hoping for a
charter school. Borton Volvo is partnering with them, to teach
these young people auto mechanics. They have twenty-two candidates
for this year. These are mostly high school dropouts, that can
learn a trade and also earn their GED.

The Delray Beach Police Department is the only one in the country with a
program of this kind. This program could be an example for others
to follow. Our club is involved in giving a scholarship in former
Police Chief Rick Overman's name. This is quite a tribute to
him.

Next Week: President-elect Mark Denkler has invited, for our guest
speaker, Pam Sharonhouse, Supervisor of Headstart. Our greeter will
be Gerry Meeks.

For those of you that have not given us your E-mail address, please call
Rel Moorcroft; he needs it to update our club files. I also need it
for the newsletter distribution. Thanks!
