ROTARY RAMBLINGS
Delray Beach Rotary Club
July 2, 2002
Today, our new president, Pat Archer presided over her first official
meeting, doing a great job. Hack Allen gave the invocation. Jimmy
Weatherspoon, without Bruce Williams on piano, was gracious enough to lead us
in only one song (thanks Jimmy, we don't sound so good without Bruce).
Pat announced that the Youth Enrichment Program (last week's speakers) did
receive their school charter, thus qualifying them for our scholarship.
Next Tuesday, July 9, at 7:30 a.m., Ellie's Marilyn Room, our monthly Board
Meeting will be held. All members are invited to attend. Also, next week,
our President-elect Mark Denkler will be presiding over our noon meeting.
Harvey Brown welcomed visiting Rotarians Charlie O'Keefe, Marian Blackwell.
Lou Cucci presented our banner to Charlie O'Keefe, of Westchester, PA. Make
ups were done by Leo Phillips and Dave Harden; thanks!
Jeff Bailey, one of our recent scholarship recipients, was present and spoke
briefly to the club, thanking all of us for his scholarship, and his plans
for the future. He is a fine example of why we do what we do in Rotary!
Candace Etzler, Sergeant at Arms, twisted a few arms, to collect a total of
$55.00 for the day.
The club received a letter from Terrell Bennett's mother, on his behalf (he
is ten years old), thanking our club for sending him to Summer Basketball
Clinic. Who knows, we may be helping to develop a star!
Our club is proposing Maria "Barnie" Shuhi for membership; this is the first
publication.
Jimmy Weatherspoon had the pleasure of introducing Pamela Shannonhouse, from
the Free to Grow in Palm Beach County program, a division of Head Start. Ms.
Shannonhouse grew up in Belle Glade, went to college in Tyler, Texas. She
has been a Palm Beach County Social Worker since 1976.
Ms. Shannonhouse explained that the Free to Grow program has just completed
its' first year, and has three more to go. The first year was to plan and
organize, the next three years will be to implement it. It is one of 18 such
programs in the U. S., and the only one in Florida. It certainly could serve
as a model for many more in our state. They are leading a new effort to
prevent alcohol and drug abuse and other dangerous behaviors among children.
Research has shown that many prevention programs don't work because they are
too little, too late. A shocking fact was related; that children are using
drugs as early as four years old. They are hoping to continue the program
at the end of the four years.
For your information, our own member, Jimmy Weatherspoon does volunteer work
with this organization; trying to help make a difference in our children of
Delray Beach. Children need stable, safe communities for healthy
development. For more information: Dr. Carmen Nicholas, Director Palm Beach
County Head Start, 561-233-1612, or: enichola@co.palm-beach.fl.us.
Next Week: Our guest speaker will be: Earl Mixon, Executive Director of
Housing Finance Authority. Our greeter will be: Stormi Norem.
