ROTARY RAMBLINGS
DELRAY BEACH ROTARY CLUB
July 9, 2002
The Board of Directors of the Delray Beach Rotary Club met at 7:30 a.m.,
today, amidst torrential downpours, proving they are a dedicated group! It
is an open meeting, to all our members. Only the Board can vote on issues,
but all members are invited to attend. The meetings are held at Ellie's
Marilyn Room, the second Tuesday of each month, at 7:30 a.m.
In the absence of our new president, our new President-elect Mark Denkler led
a great meeting. (Good practice, Mark.) Rev. Jim Atchison (retired)
certainly is a pro when it comes to invocations. Rev. Atchison, yours was
quite eloquent. Jimmy Weatherspoon, boosted the morale of the group, on a
rainy day, by leading us in our theme song, "Smile." By the way, rumors are,
that Bruce Williams will be going on vacation, despite our pleas to stay and
entertain. We certainly are going to miss you; hurry back!
Harvey Brown welcomed four visiting Rotarians. David Van Gorp had his
daughter with him; home from college. Rich Connell presented our banner to
visiting Rotarian, Pam Murphy, of Champagne, IL. We had two loyal members do
make ups: John Arnold and George Kientzy; thanks to both of you. We won't
mention names of the three AWOL's, but you know who you are!
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report. Today the market was down slightly, but
he did remind us of how beautifully the market was up last Friday. His
comment: "the market seemingly is settling in." (Whatever that means.)
Rich Connell, Sergeant at Arms, doing a great first time job, collected a
total of $42.00. Steve Bates had the winning ticket that allowed him to pick
a card. Since he did not draw the ace of spades, the winnings exceed last
week's $209.50.
REMINDER: New pages for our member book are being compiled. If you have new
information, such as address change, or addition of E-mail, please contact
Rel Moorcroft immediately. If you are a new member, please see Art NeJame,
our illustrious photographer, to have your picture made for the book. This
book is vital to our members, especially the new ones.
ANNOUNCEMENT: At our Board of Directors meeting, it was announced that our
Service Above Self Award ceremony will be held at Old School Square, October
29, 11:30-1:30. The recipient has not yet been announced. For our new
members: an outstanding local person is chosen for this prestigious award
each year, with a ceremony and luncheon in their honor. A brick is placed on
the walkway of Old School Square with their name on it, honoring their works
to our community.
Also, at the board meeting, it was discussed to form a Roteract Club at
Atlantic High School, with a committee, headed by Lou Cucci, and including
Mark Denkler. This would be under Community Service category.
ANNOUNCEMENT: It has been proposed to have a social at Ellie's Flamingo Room
on Friday, August 23. This will be an informal event, including members of
Rotary Sunrise Club and Boynton-Lantana Rotary Club. Our new District
Governor will be invited also. More discussion will be announced next week.
In the meantime, please mark your calendar, for a tentative date.
Our speaker for today was introduced by Jimmy Weatherspoon. He is Mr. Earl
L. Mixon, Executive Director of the Housing Finance Authority of Palm Beach
County, for the past twenty-four years. He is employed by the Board of
County Commissioners of Palm Beach County. (He must be doing something
right!)
Mr. Mixon's credentials are quite impressive. He grew up in West Palm Beach.
He holds a BS in Business Administration; Masters in Public Administration.
He is the recipient of numerous civic, fraternal, governmental and
professional awards. He was the first black city councilman, vice mayor and
mayor of Mangonia Park. He stresses that he is a very active and productive
Christian member of Payne Chapel A.M.E. Church of West Palm Beach.
Mr. Mixon gave statistics of how his office has helped out since 1977 to
bring clean, affordable, decent housing to the residents of Palm Beach
County. The bulk of the housing is west of I-95, with none of the projects
in Delray Beach; why? His office has only two employees; he and his
secretary. Although his staff is small, he deals with millions in
allocations. Again, sounds like this is quite a viable agency.
Next Week: Our guest speaker will be Patrick Franklin, Interim President/CEO
of Urban League, Palm Beach County.
This is the second publishing, presenting Marian "Barnie" Shuhi as a proposed
new member. Welcome, Barnie!
Our official Greeter today was Stormi Norem, doing an excellent job! Next
week, our Greeter will be Dave O'Connell. This is such a great way to start
our Rotary meetings, with a friendly face and a warm handshake.
