ROTARY RAMBLINGS
DELRAY BEACH ROTARY CLUB
JULY 16, 2002
Our new president, Pat Archer, did a tremendous job presiding over our
meeting. She's very enthusiastic; I'm sure it's going to be a great year
under her leadership. Gerry Meeks gave the invocation. With Bruce Williams
away, Jimmy Weatherspoon still did a great job leading the group singing
acappella. (Bruce, please hurry back!)
Harvey Brown welcomed our visiting Rotarians, a total of five. Dorian, you
are always welcome. Fred Bonardi gave our banner to John Howard, Patterson,
NJ. Lyn Huckle brought us two banners from MI. Welcome home, Lyn.
Lou Cucci did a great job as Sergeant at Arms. He collected a total of
$52.00, without any birthdays. As a new member, this has to be a tough job.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report. At noon, the Dow was down 50 points; at
1:00, he stated the Dow was down only 15 points; the NASDAQ was up 21 points.
Greenspan spoke today; Fred's quote: "the economy looks good."
Bill Arnst, holding the green hat, asked a guest to draw a ticket; it was
his! Well-----he did not win the pot of $246.50. As the pot grows, it
becomes more and more lucrative.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Please mark your calendar now! Our club is sponsoring
a ROTARY SUMMER SOCIAL. The date is: August 23, 7:00 p.m., Ellie's Flamingo
Room. This social is to bring together Rotarians for a great evening of
"getting acquainted." This is not a fundraiser, but a night of fun. The
price of this is $30.00 per person. A wonderful menu is available; we also
will have entertainment. Our club has personally invited Delray Sunrise and
Boynton-Lantana Rotary Clubs. Any other friends, Rotarians, or interested
persons, are also invited to attend. This would be a wonderful way to get a
friend interested in becoming a member of our wonderful club. For
information and reservations, please call Lou Cucci, as soon as possible:
561-330-8445.
Mark Denkler introduced one of our scholarship recipients, Mosa (?) Hartman.
Ms. Hartman is a bright young lady, who is very grateful to our club for
helping to make her education possible. She will be attending Miami U.,
studying Psychology. Our committee does a great job of picking the
recipients. When you meet these young people, you realize why we work so
hard having our fundraisers! President Archer read a letter from Florida
Sheriff's Ranch, thanking us for our support.
Jimmy Weatherspoon had the pleasure of introducing his "boss" and our guest
speaker, Patrick J. Franklin, President and CEO of Urban League of Palm Beach
County. Mr. Franklin is a native of Baton Rouge, LA. Upon graduation from
Southern University, in Baton Rouge, he began a career with Shell Oil Co., as
an Exploration Geophysicist. He was a cofounder of one of the largest oil
and gas reserve finds in the history of Oil and Gas Exploration in the Gulf
of Mexico.
In 1988, Mr. Franklin and family moved to South Florida, beginning his career
with Motorola, accepting a position in Operations/Program Management. While
at Motorola, he received his MBA from Florida International University. In
February 2002, Mr. Franklin accepted his current position as Interim
President/CEO of Urban League of Palm Beach County.
He informed us the main office is located in West Palm Beach, but an
affiliate office is located in Delray Beach, where Jimmy Weatherspoon works.
There is also an office in Palm Beach Lakes, with representatives traveling
over the county. This is not to be confused with West Palm Beach Urban
League, this office encompasses Palm Beach County.
Some of the purposes of this league is to provide a Housing Program for first
time home buyers, which entails a year long preparation program. Another
purpose is to provide Housing Developments. They also sponsor four summer
programs for the youth. These are mostly high risk, single parent children.
These are middle school age students, working in summer classes, preparing
them for high school. He stated how impressed he was, walking into a
classroom of students, all working hard to achieve their goals. Another goal
is to develop the disabled, of all ages. This is a very diversified agency.
Mr. Franklin has a tremendous challenge ahead; we wish him the very best in
his career. For more information: 561-833-1461; E-mail: franklin@ulpbc.org.
Next Week: Our speaker will be William Sanders, Project Director of Delray
Beach Community Development Corporation. Our greeter will be: Sylvia Pecaro.
Food for thought: Life is like a piano - what you get out of it depends on
how you play it!
