ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH

ROTARY RAMBLINGS

Upon arriving at the Flamingo Room of Ellie's 50 Dinner, attending Rotarians
received a warm greeting at the door from Sylvia Pecaro.   With Bruce
Williams on vacation for the summer, there was no music, just the sound of
voices having quiet table conversations.

Our jovial president, Pat Archer, opened the meeting asking that we shake
hands with those around us.  We pledged our allegiance to the U.S. flag and
sang our weekly song, "My Country 'Tis of Thee".  Lula Butler gave a calming
prayer and Jimmy Weatherspoon led the group in singing two songs.  No, we
did not sing "Smile".

There were no birthdays or wedding anniversaries this week, but Harvey Brown
welcomed Charlie O'Keefe who was visiting us from Pennsylvania. There were
no takers for the donated banner, although we had eight AWOL's and no
make-ups.

Fred Bonardi gave the stock report, trying in vain to cheer us up.  He
reported that the market was up 75 points and he is optimistic that the
second half of the year will be better.  Fred also served as our
Sergeant-At-Arms today and collected a total of $62.00, which includes money
received for the scholarship fund.

Jimmy Weatherspoon introduced our guest speaker, William Sanders, Project
Director of Delray Beach Community Development Corporation.  Mr. Sanders has
twenty-one years of experience in economic development. The Delray Beach
CDC, one of six in Palm Beach County, is a community-based non-profit
organization chartered by the State of Florida to promote and undertake
community development activities in the City of Delray Beach.  The Board of
Directors of the Delray Beach CDC is composed of bankers, accountants and
attorneys, along with other community businessmen.  The mission of the
Delray Beach CDC is to improve the quality of life, with resident
participation by addressing housing needs, crime prevention, economic
development, education and recreation in the Delray Beach community.
Currently, the Delray Beach CDC is a joint venture partner in a mixed-use
office/retail/residential development project on West Atlantic Avenue known
as the Atlantic Grove Project.  This includes townhouses to be built for
moderate income homeowners.  This project takes up two City blocks with the
two commercial buildings fronting West Atlantic Avenue.  To date, the Delray
Beach CDC has assisted in over one hundred units being sold to first time
home buyers.

Jim Pignato drew the ten of clubs, so the pot will continue to increase.
