ROTARY RAMBLINGS
DELRAY BEACH ROTARY CLUB
July 30, 2002
I will start with a big thank you to Nancy Jackson for her great presentation
of the "Ramblin's" last week, in my absence.
President Pat Archer presided over another great meeting. Ron Backer gave
the invocation, thanking God for the rescue of the miners, and thankful to
live in our wonderful America. Jimmy Weatherspoon led the singing acappella,
since Bruce Williams has deserted us (for a vacation).
Emmett Gumm had the extreme pleasure of inducting "Barnie" Shuhi into our
club today. Barnie is the past president of the former Lantana Rotary Club
(now Boynton-Lantana Rotary). She is a registered Parliamentarian. She sure
will be an asset to our club. She also wanted me to mention that our
visitor, Mr. Dennis, served as an impromptu guest speaker at her club many
times.
We had two anniversaries: Jim and Barbara Blocker, with 6 years; Roy and Beth
Simon, married 41 years ago. Congratulations to all of you.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, the stock broker with a beautiful lilt in her voice,
gave a comforting stock report, explaining that "consumer confidence is down,
because of the turmoil in the economy."
Bruce Wenzel cheerfully welcomed our visiting Rotarians; among them, Jeff
Dennis, New Providence, Bahamas; Cam Murphy, Chanpagne/Urbana, IL; Fred
Runkel, Dave Armstrong's guest. Ms. Murphy presented our club with her club
banner. We had three make ups. There were four AWOL's!
Candace Etzler did a great job as Sergeant at Arms, collecting $70.00; not
bad for a hot day in Delray!
REMINDER: Summer Social - August 23, 2002 - Ellie's Flamingo Room! The price
is $30.00 per person; a wonderful meal; wonderful music; wonderful friends!
Be there! (See Lou Cucci for more details and reservations: 561-330-8445.)
Dave O'Connell had the winning ticket, enabling him to draw a card from the
deck--------well, now the pot is up to $284.00; I could win yet!
Jim Weatherspoon had the pleasure of presenting a very pleasant lady as our
speaker today; Peggy Hollis, Senior Community Action Specialist, of Palm
Beach County Board of County Commissioners Community Action Program. She has
worked for Palm Beach County twenty-seven years. She was born and raised in
Boynton Beach. She is a graduate of Carver High School and Roosevelt
University, Chicago, IL. She is actually Reverend Peggy Hollis, since she is
the pastor of Hopewell Institutional Baptist Church, West Boynton Beach Blvd.
Rev. Hollis gave statistics and details of what the county uses as guidelines
for qualifications for her agency's services. For example: 2002 guideline
is income $11,075.00 maximum.
Some of the services offered are food/nutritution; utility assistance;
vouchers to purchase school clothes and supplies; camps; income tax
assistance; GED classes; employment services; tutoring, to name a few. For
the holidays, such as, Thanksgiving and Christmas, food and gifts are
supplied.
This is a Palm Beach County agency, not a Federal Government agency.
Services are free of charge for all low-income individuals in Palm Beach
County whose annual incomes are within Federal Poverty Guidelines. Donations
of clothing and household items are always welcome. Thanks to businesses,
corporations, civic groups and local organizations and individuals, over two
million dollars in donated goods were contributed to Community Action during
the past year. Ms. Hollis may be reached at 561-278-8090.
Next week's program is a surprise! Our greeter will be none other than Uncle
Luigi's nephew, Jim Pignato!
Some Perks of Being Over 50..........
Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size.
Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them
either.
Jim Blocker and Rich Connell are working diligently to get our website up and
running, soon! Thanks guys!
