ROTARY RAMBLINGS
DELRAY BEACH ROTARY CLUB
August 6, 2002

We sure are experiencing extreme August heat, here in South Florida. It
didn't seem to daunt the spirits of our club members, however. We had a good
attendance, with much enthusiasm. Our meeting was presided over by President
Pat Archer, along with President-elect Mark Denkler; it seemed to be a joint
effort.

Tony Allerton gave a lovely, moving, invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon (the
brave soul) led us acappella, with our singing. Dr. Janus Styperek donated
$40.00 for his and Janina's anniversary; thank you.

Harvey Brown welcomed visiting Rotarians. Lyn Huckle paid for a banner we
did not give away. Our visitors today were Fred Runkel (prospective member)
and Bunny Webb. As most of you know, Bunny is the wife of Gene Webb, former
member who held many offices within our club. He is in North Carolina,
running a backhoe, carving out his little piece of heaven, in Bunny Hollow.

We heard from Dr. Gay Vela, a member, who has been unable to attend meetings
recently, due to her father's illness, Dr. Wright. He is a long time friend
of our club, and is in ill health. Dr. Vela, we miss you.

We had four make ups: Gerry Meeks, John Arnold, George Kientzy (2), and Dave
Harden. We thank you for your efforts.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report, reporting a great day today (at
noon), since the market was up.

Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, after having "pin check," collected a total
of $111.00. Ernie Simon donated $5.00, to introduce his guest, Diana Lewis,
candidate for Circuit Judge. This is a reminder that the primary election
will be held September 10. Please mark your calendar, and get out and vote.

Mark Denkler introduced one of our scholarship recipients, J. R. Crowel. He
will be attending Tulane University, studying Business Management, and
playing baseball for the school. He is an award winning pitcher; we wish him
the best, and appreciate him coming to our meeting to say thank you for the
scholarship. Rel Moorcroft had the winning ticket to draw for the "green
hat" winnings. Well, we are coming closer to having a winner; each week the
odds get better; the pot grows larger!

REMINDER: Our Old Fashioned Summer Social is coming up August 23, 7:00-11:00
p.m., Ellie's Flamingo Room. Time is running out; make your reservations
today. You may call Louis Cucci 561-330-8445, for reservations. All checks
should be given, or sent to Rel Moorcroft. We are looking forward to a
fantastic meal, social, and good music by Tony Mecca Trio. The price is
$30.00 per person; bring a friend, spouse, (as Lew would say) or whatever!

Our Program Chairman for this month, Jess Sowards, introduced his friend and
guest speaker, Mimi Haley Meister, Director of Marketing and Community
Affairs, Kids in Distress. Ms. Meister has been a professional fundraiser
for Kids in Distress for six years. During this time, she has accomplished a
five million capital campaign and increased goals in two million annual
campaigns while developing and implementing new programs and divisions within
the program. (We sure need her as a member of our club! Come on Jess, work
on this.)

Prior to this position, Ms. Meister was an executive for high-end retail
establishments for 15 years. She felt the need to give back to the
community, thus her present position.

She told us this program was implemented about 20 years ago. 3,000 children
are served by this program yearly, in South Florida. Presently, a facility
at Wilton Manors holds 210 children; a 24 hour, 7 days a week protection for
them. These are children who have been abused, even to attempted murder.
They are also placed in foster homes and adopted. This program is a model,
which is being studied nationally. Other states come to study this program.
Their objective is to stop the cycle of abuse! A special note: only 7.3% of
their funding goes to administration. This is a wonderful program; our hats
off to Mimi Haley Meister and her efforts in the Kids in Distress Program.
Her phone # is: (954) 390-7620; E-mail: mimih@kidsindistress.org.

This is the first publication for membership for Frederick Runkel. Mr.
Runkel is a previous member of Rotary Club of Pawling, NY. He is a Senior
Active, Retired.

Next Week: You have to come "See" our program. Our guest speaker will be Dr.
Winnick, specialist in eye surgery. This promises to be an eye-opening
experience. More on him next week.

Words of Wisdom: (By Egon)

If you take an Oriental person and spin him around several times, does he
become disorientated?

Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?
