ROTARY RAMBLINGS
DELRAY BEACH ROTARY CLUB
August 13, 2002
SPECIAL EVENT: OLD FASHIONED SUMMER SOCIAL, FRIDAY, AUGUST 23, 2002, ELLIE'S
FLAMINGO ROOM, 7:00-11 PM. Please contact Lou Cucci, or Rel Moorcroft, by
Friday, August 16. Reservations must be made. There will be open bar,
fabulous buffet menu, entertainment, lots of friendly faces.
The crowd was small, but the enthusiasm high, as President Pat Archer led
another fantastic Rotary meeting. Jim Pignato gave a biblical reading, and a
sincere thanks for our existence as Rotarians. The nice surprise for the day
was to indoctrinate Rich Connell as song leader. We hear he is very
musically talented. (Seems this surfer boy is full of surprises.)
We want to wish Pat Archer a happy birthday. She donated $29.00, just to
hear us sing to her. We also want to wish Hack and Gloria Allen a happy
anniversary; they are doing something right; it's their 55th; he donated
$55.00; congratulations to all.
Gerry Meeks, without knowing he was on the greeting committee, did a fine job
of welcoming visitors. (Gerry, that's what happens when your fiends desert
you.) He welcomed Fred Runkel, guest of David Armstrong. Our make up list
includes Joyce Lunsford, Leo Phillips (many times), Lou Cucci, John Arnold
and Lyn Huckle. We thank each of you for taking time to do this. We did
have about six AWOL's; shame on you!
Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton, gathered in a total of $131.00; making it a
great day for a small group. Gil Forbes was kind enough to pay for a banner
that we could not give away.
Jim Blocker was the lucky(?) one to have the ticket to draw a card from the
deck. The total is now $319.00, making it more interesting for me to win;
sorry Jim.
Barnie Shuhi, our newest member, gave us a brief update on the Rotary
Magazine. She did a fine job, and will be doing this monthly.
President Archer read a letter from Boy Scouts Council, thanking our club for
our participation. She also announced the District Convention, October 4-6,
Jupiter Beach Resort. She also mentioned that the club will reimburse
members their registration fee and one night stay at the resort. This is a
great proposal, and hope many of you will participate. Please contact Pat
for further information.
Mark Denkler introduced a fine young man who is one of our scholarship
recipients, Aaron Tucker. Aaron plans to go to UF and study engineering. He
thanked us for the scholarship, and for lunch.
Jim Blocker and Rich Connell are working tirelessly, donating their time, to
get our website up and running. They handed out permission forms to each
member present, so as to put each member's personal information on the
website, along with your picture. They cannot and will not do this without
your permission form filled out and returned. Please cooperate with these
guys; it can be very beneficial to each of us. If you did not receive one of
these forms, please see Jim or Rich for one.
Jess Sowards did another fine job of selecting our guest speaker. He was Dr.
Mark Winnick, Ophthalmologist, with Delray Eye Associates. He specializes in
corneal transplants. Dr. Winnick is an enthusiastic young doctor, well
trained. He received his degrees from University of Michigan, and Wayne
State University of Detroit, where he was elected to the A.O.A. Honor Medical
Society. He completed a fellowship in Cornea, External Disease and Laser
Refractive Surgery at The John Hopkins Hospital. He specializes in the
medical management of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the ocular
surface and surgical manipulations including cataract extraction, corneal
transplantation and laser refractive surgery.
He elaborated on Cataract Surgery, Glaucoma, and Macular Degeneration. He
was very interesting, and informative. I think his audience could have
listened to an all day seminar, time permitting. It's good to know we have
come so far in medicine, and to have such a fine doctor in our area; it's an
eye opener!
Next Week: Our speaker will be: Mark Robson, South Region Director of the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. This should be very
interesting. Joyce Lunsford will be our Greeter.
