ROTARY RAMBLINGS
DELRAY BEACH ROTARY CLUB
AUGUST 20, 2002
We were greeted by a lovely smile, belonging to Joyce Lunsford. She wore her
badge, indicating she was the Official Greeter for today. It is a great
feeling, especially to our visitors, to be greeted by a smiling face. Let's
all participate in this so important gesture.
President Pat Archer tried to confuse some of us, by changing the sequence of
the meeting; well it worked! Ernie Simon gave the invocation; Jimmy
Weatherspoon, not pressing his luck, led us in our theme song (Smile) only,
since he had no accompaniment.
Fred Bonardi, feeling very optimistic, gave a good stock report. He told us
the DOW is only down 10%; NASDAQ down 27%; S&P only down 16% for the year.
He feels by Fall, things will be looking good again. (Good report, Fred.)
Ernie Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected $74.00, with no birthdays or
anniversaries. Lyn Huckle contributed $20.00 of this.
President Archer installed Lyn Huckle into the elite group of Paul Harris
Fellows today. We all congratulate you Lyn; you sure are carrying on the
Rotary Spirit!
Harvey Brown welcomed our one visiting Rotarian, Orin Littlejohn, of
Marshall, TX. Bill Harvey presented Mr. Littlejohn with our banner. Dave
Armstrong introduced his "regular guest" Fred Runkel, who has been presented
to the club for membership. Bill Adams introduced his special guest, Takuya
Okamoto, of Miyasu, Japan, our sister city. Takuya is a nineteen year old
young man, attending Tokyo University. He is studying Global Economics. He
is in the U. S. for three weeks, staying with Bill and Charlotte Adams. I
had the pleasure of sitting next to him. I asked him what he found most
interesting about our country. He told me: "Americans drive on the wrong
side. The American youth look more mature than Japanese youth."
We also had a very distinguished guest today, who was a guest of Arthur Reef,
Mr. Frank Devine. Mr. Devine is a former diplomat to many South American
countries.
We wish to thank our members who did make ups: Dave Harden and Bill Talen,
(who we all believe is a descendant of Jesse James).
Again, Jim Blocker had the ticket that allowed him to pick a card for the
green hat drawing. Well, Jim, I hear third time is a charm; you had better
not have the winning ticket next week!
Program Chairman Jess Sowards, introduced our guest speaker for today. He is
Mark Robson, South Region Director of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission. The South Region covers 10 counties from Fort Pierce to Key
West. This also includes the central Everglades, Lake Okeechobee and the
Southwest Florida coast. The Fish and Wildlife Commission is the state
agency responsible for protecting and managing our wildlife, freshwater,
marine fish and other marine animals. This is a tremendous responsibility
for this commission, especially with all the human growth. They are trying
to protect wildlife by keeping it in remote areas, but we keep encroaching
upon them; it's called progress.
Mr. Robson tells us this is a constitutional agency, with volunteer board
members. There are around 1,800 conservation officers, with the power to
make arrests on land and water, without local restrictions.
Technology has come a long way in keeping track of our endangered wildlife.
He reports we have about 50 to 80 panthers. As for counting the bears, they
are doing DNA testing from "bear hair."
Since 1977, Mr. Robson has been associated with the Florida Game and Fish
Commission. In 1998, he became the region's chief administrator. Through
his experiences, Mr. Robson has developed a great deal of local knowledge
about South Florida's ecosystems, wildlife, and the challenges facing our
natural environment. He has authored a number of scientific publications. A
word of advice to all domestic pet owners: keep your pets inoculated.
Next Week: Our guest speaker will be Alan Poston, of Hardrives. I'm sure he
will have lots of interesting information for us.
Remember: This Friday, 7:00 p.m., Ellie's Flamingo Room, our Summer Social.
So far, we have a count of 43 attending. The price is $30.00 per person,
with a wonderful buffet menu; open bar; live entertainment by Tony Mecca
Trio. Sounds like a great evening. The Sunrise Rotary and Boynton-Lantana
Rotary Clubs will also be in attendance. We will be entertaining our
District Governor, Louise Cartwright, as our special guest. If you have
forgotten to make a reservation before now, please call Lou Cucci at
330-8445.
By the way, one of my Rotary friends in Chicago, who is president of his
club, just told me his club sponsored a triathlon as a fundraiser, which was
very successful. Anyone want to participate in our first one?
Egon's Extras:
If a pig loses it voice, is it disgruntled?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why are a wise man and a wise guy opposites?
Why do overlook and oversee mean opposite things?
