ROTARY RAMBLINGS

September, which begins this coming Sunday, brings in the fall season's
cooler temperatures and the end of the long summer heat wave.   Some places
in the North and Northeast portions of the United States (especially Cape
Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Atlantic City, Nantucket Sound, Long Island,
Newport, etc.) neighbors begin boarding up and the summer residents' move on
to their winter homes, such as South Florida.   Get ready, they are about to
begin arriving here!  By the way, have a safe and happy Labor Day!

Ellie's computer is sick so I was recruited! 

Our President, Pat Archer presided over today's meeting.  Joyce Lunsford
gave a very thoughtful prayer followed by Jimmy Weatherspoon leading the
group in singing one song.  With fall upon us, this means the piano music is
about to return.  Are you finished vacationing Bruce? 

There were no birthdays but Lynn Huckle contributed $52.00 because it would
have been her 52nd wedding anniversary and back when it was their 49th
wedding anniversary her late husband, George, donated 49 cents to Rotary.
She wanted to set the record straight!

Harvey Brown found no visitors and no banner takers.

Pat Archer announced that the Summer Social, last Friday evening, was a
complete success, well attended and enjoyed by all.  District Governor,
Louise Cartwright and Palm Beach County Commissioner, Mary McCarty attended
the Summer Social, along with forty-eight other area socialites.  Thanks to
Lou Cucci, who organized this great event!

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report informing us that at the moment
that the Dow was up, the S&P and NASDAQ were down.  The market closed with
all down.

Candace Etzler, our Sergeant-At-Arms reported that $104.00 was collected
today.

Jess Sowards introduced our guest speaker, Allen Poston of Hardrives.  Allen
was born in Fort Lauderdale and raised in North Miami Beach, graduating from
the University of Florida with a BS in Building Construction.  He began
working for Hardrives in 1972 as an Estimator-Project Manager being promoted
in 1984 to Vice President and later to Executive Vice President.  Allen has
served as past president of the local Associated General Contractors of
America Chapter and is involved with his community through his church. 

Allen spoke on how new innovative alternatives in contracting work are being
utilized by state and local representatives in the ways projects are led,
such as the cost/time equation equals lower total dollars and lane rentals
(accessed number of days for project completion).  There are incentive
programs created by the Governor of Florida to help put money back into the
economy, along with quicker turnaround time for completion of jobs.

Another unnecessary hazard of working in construction is on I-95 where
construction workers have been killed by drivers doing 75 to 85 mph in a 55
mph construction zone.  Remember this the next time you are speeding through
a construction zone.  

Fred Runkel visited today and will be inducted into Rotary next week.

The Service Above Self 2002 recipient will be Leon Weekes who will be
recognized for his tireless, unselfish service to our community.  The award
is to recognize and honor individuals who have given far beyond themselves
to the community.  The award ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 29,
2002, 11:30 a.m. at the Old School Square Gym.

Rel Moorcroft had the winning ticket but did not pick the Ace of Spades.
The pot continues to grow with an estimated $360 in it.
