ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
September 3, 2002
Hope everyone had a terrific Labor Day weekend. Now, to prepare for another
season, and to greet the migration of snowbirds back shortly. They don't
seem to understand that we have lovely weather twelve months a year in South
Florida.
President Pat Archer presided over our meeting, changing the format again, so
as to confuse some of us, to see if we are awake. Bill Adams gave a lovely
invocation; he is a very sincere Rotarian. I am proud to call him a fellow
Rotarian.
Welcome back Bruce Williams! You have really been missed! If you don't
believe it, ask Jimmy Weatherspoon, who struggled along without you, trying
to make his "choir" sound good (it didn't work). You were in rare form
today. (As a matter of fact, all three of our Bruces were back today.) We
sang Happy Birthday to Harvey Brown, who donated $25.00 to our club. We
thank you, and wish you many more.
Emmett Gumm had the honor of inducting our newest member, Fred Runkel. He
told us a bit about Fred, stating he was a Navy pilot, taking off carriers,
and being shot down three times. Sounds like we would like to have Fred tell
us more about his exciting life. Welcome; thank you for choosing our Rotary
Club.
Fred Bonardi had the duty of giving a stock market report. As most of you
know the market was really down. Fred stated: "most of the bad news is built
in." He had with him today, as his guest, Kelly Warner.
Bruce Wenzel greeted visiting Rotarians Marianne Blackwell and Cam Murphy.
Bill Whitman, welcome back, and thank you for bringing your guest Roger Cope.
Rich Connell had his lovely wife Lidia with him. We had make ups done by
Bill Arnst, George Kientzy, John Arnold and Dave Harden. We thank each of
you for taking the time to do this.
Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler, collected $137.00. AWOL's Bill Whitworth
($14.00), and Hume Rennick ($38.00), certainly contributed to this total.
Hume also had the winning ticket to draw a card. The new total is now
$370.00.
Mark Denkler had the honor of introducing our guest speaker, County
Commissioner Mary McCarty. Ms. McCarty was a City Commissioner before
becoming a County Commissioner. She was also an intern for Tip O'Neal, and a
1972 graduate of Michigan University.
She gave us some very interesting information about our upcoming elections.
Next Tuesday, September 10, will be our primary election. With 155,000
registered people in our county, only about 5,000 will vote. Due to the
latest census taken, many things have changed. You should have received a
new voter registration card in the mail. Please take a minute to see if your
voting place is the same. Many have been changed. Ms. McCarty states all
school board positions will be on the ballot; state house and senate will
also be on ballot. She says it could be chaos, due to the changed precincts
and new voting machines. In November the voters will be asked to vote on
term limits. Our county was the only county in Florida to receive Triple
Bond Rating. She was very informative, getting us excited to get out and
vote! Exercise your rights, vote for what you believe in, every vote counts!
Our "usher" (greeter) today was Rev. Jim Atchison. Next week, our greeter
will be Rich Connell.
Next Tuesday morning, 7:30 a.m. will be our monthly Board of Directors
meeting at Ellie's Marilyn Room. All members are invited to attend.
Our speaker for next week will be Bill Andrews, Florida State Representative.
Let's all be here to hear Bill and ask any questions of concern that you may
have. Joyce Lunsford has lined up some great speakers for the month of
September, thanks Joyce.
A special thanks to Nancy Jackson for getting the bulletin out last week. I
asked her as she was entering the meeting; she respond with "of course."
Thanks to Jim Blocker, Computer Doctor, for isolating and destroying three
viruses in my computer; he is an expert!
