ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
September 10, 2002
About a dozen of us started our day with a board meeting at 7:30 a.m., at
Ellie's Marilyn Room. This meeting is open to all members and I urge you to
come and see how diligently this board works to represent our club and the
ideals of Rotary. I think you will be as impressed as I am each time I
attend.
As we walked into the noon meeting, we were greeted by Rich Connell, (except
the late comers; he got too hungry to wait for you) and the wonderful music
of Bruce Williams. Does it get any better than that?
President Archer presided over another well "put together" meeting. Dave
Harden gave a very moving invocation. Gerry Meeks was "coaxed" into leading
the singing, doing a great job. We sang Happy Birthday to Candace Etzler,
who donated $21.00, and Tom Cook who graced us with his presence, donating
$25.00. It was good to see him, and thanks to both of your for your
donations. (Was the donation really your age?)
It was brought to our attention that a former member, Bob Archer is deceased.
Harvey Brown informed us, and said he will announce the time of Mr. Archer's
memorial service. Our condolences go out to his family.
Our professional "dancer" Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, gave a wonderful stock
market "routine." She sure stays positive and confident that things will get
better, and of course, they will.
Harvey Brown welcomed two visiting Rotarians, Bob Erickson and Bob Miller.
Our make ups were Leo Phillips, Tom Cook (11 X's?) and George Kientzy, who
donated $20.00 on behalf of his return. It sure is good to see you back,
George.
Sergeant at Arms Roy Simon, collected a total of $126.00. He had great
categories to choose from; no wonder he did so well. Mark Denkler donated
the banner, which no one received. Joyce Lunsford held the winning ticket,
for the card draw. Well, she made our odds better again. The green hat now
contains about $404.50.
Barnie Shuhi gave her monthly report on excerpts from our Rotarian magazine,
doing another terrific job; thank you Barnie.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Our fundraiser Entertainment Books, will be available next
week. Also, the Gridiron tickets will be available. Our Mystery Conference,
District 6930, will take place October 4, 5, and 6, at the Jupiter Beach
Resort. Registration forms are available.
Mark Denkler had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, who most of
us already know, Florida House of Representative, Bill Andrews.
It would take two pages to cover the political career of Mr. Andrews. His
term expires shortly; he seems very glad to "get some rest." His career
began in Delray Beach. To name only a few: 1993-1994, Palm Beach County
Design Task Force and Urban Forum Study; 1988-1992, City of Delray Beach
Commission; 1987-1988, City of Delray Beach Planning and Zoning Board;
1994-2002, Florida House of Representatives.
I feel Mr. Andrews' most compelling purpose is "lobbying for kids." He is so
concerned with having equal education for all our children. I am sure this
will not stop with his "term limit." He certainly is a true advocate of
this, and is admired for it.
September 10 is primary election; exercise your freedom. If you did not
vote, shame on you!
A memorial service will be taking place at Old School Square, September 11,
at 7:30 p.m. Bring a candle, to light. Let's all say a prayer for our great
country, and for world peace.
This is the first publication for new membership, for Roger Cope. Mr. Cope
is a local architect. His sponsor is Bill Whitworth.
NEXT Week: Our guest speaker will be Tom Newberry, Director of Children's
Hope and Horses. Our greeter will be Steve Bates.
