ROTARY RAMBLINGS
 ROTARY CLUB DELRAY BEACH
SEPTEMBER 17, 2002

Today was yet another fine Rotary meeting. President Pat Archer presided,
with President-elect Mark Denkler assisting. Candace Etzler gave a lovely
invocation. Jimmy Weatherspoon sure had an easy job leading the group in
singing, with Bruce Williams accompanying him. Bruce is such a professional,
making our meetings begin with such a flair.

We sang Happy Birthday to Tony Allerton, who graciously donated $20.00 to our
club, just to hear us sing!

Bruce Wenzel welcomed one visiting Rotarian, Jeffrey Dennis, from New
Providence, Bahamas. Make ups were done by John Arnold and Bill Talen, way
up north. It's almost season, come on down.

Sergeant at Arms Ernie Simon, collected $94.00. Harvey Brown donated $5.00
on behalf of Harvey Brown, Jr., who just passed the Bar exam;
congratulations!

President Archer made a couple of announcements:
1. If you are only having soup and salad for lunch, do not take a dinner
plate; we are charged for a full lunch if you do. (They charge by the plate
count.)

2. District Conference 6930, October 4, 5, 6, Jupiter Beach Resort.
President Archer noted our club will pay for one night, and your registration
fee. This sure sounds like a real deal, for anyone that wants to have a
great time, and learn more about Rotary.

Past President Emmett Gumm announced that our current fundraiser, the
Entertainment Books have arrived. I looked them over today; using it twice
pays for it; the price is $30.00. If you are looking for a present for a
friend, this is it!

This is the second publication for Roger Cope, (Classification, Architect)
for membership. His office is located downtown on N. E. Fourth Avenue.

Mark Denkler introduced our guest speaker today, Tom Newbery, Director,
Funding Resources, for Children, Hope and Horses. Their mission statement
is: The mission of Children, Hope and Horses is to establish a positive and
supportive learning environment for abused, neglected and abandoned children.
Through a structured interactive child-and-horse program, every child is
provided an opportunity to build self-esteem, self worth and the confidence
to grow and develop into responsible, productive adults.

Laura Newbery, President

Children, Hope and Horses is Tom Newbery's daughter Laura's dream. It is
Tom's job to help her make that dream a reality. Tom, as Director of Funding
Resources, must readjust, from the for-profit world he worked in, to the
non-profit charity he works with today.

The children in this program are from the courts of Palm Beach County. They
are abused, neglected children with no self-esteem. Laura's dream is to make
a difference. Her father is there to see that her dream is fulfilled.

Mr. Newbery gave us a wish list for the organization. Surely, you know
someone that owns a horse that might be able to help supply their needs. If
not, monetary gifts are welcome. Their facility is located at Sunshine
Meadows, on 441, north of Clint Moore Road, south of Linton Boulevard. Their
phone number is: 561-977-6693.

We wish to thank Steve Bates for doing such a fine job as Greeter today.
Next week, our greeter will be none other than Harvey Brown. Our guest
speaker will be Joe Gillie, Director Old School Square. Joe always has a lot
of great information to share with us; be there!

"A hundred years from now, it won't matter what your bank account was, the
sort of house you lived in, or the kind of car you drove, but the world may
be different because you were important in the life of a child."
