ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB DELRAY BEACH
September 24, 2002
President Pat Archer presided over our meeting. Jimmy Weatherspoon did
double duty, giving the invocation, then doing a fine job leading the
singing. (Thought he was about to take up collection, also.) Bruce Williams
greeted all of us with his fine music. We sang Happy Birthday to Mickey
Manning, Arthur Reef and Rich Connell. We also sang Happy Anniversary to Rel
and Regie Moorcroft.
Harvey Brown had an easy job welcoming visitors; our only visitor was Rich
Connell's visitor, Sheri Pittman, who will be our guest speaker next week.
Make ups were done by Egon Kurz, Lou Cucci and Bill Talen. (Bill it's time
to come south.) We had a few AWOL's; shame on you! Fred Runkel was gracious
enough to pay for a banner that was not given away.
Fred Bonardi (brave soul) gave the stock market report. The information was
so grim, I will not print it. Let's hope for better news by next week.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, with all the birthdays and anniversary, he
collected a total of $142.60. (I'm not sure what the sixty cents is for.)
Our green hat is now worth $428.00, since Bruce Wenzel was unable to pull the
ace of spades from the deck.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: District 6930 Conference, Jupiter Resort, October 4, 5, and
6. Our club needs 8 members to attend. The club will pay for registration
and one night's stay; we need more attendees. Also, remember the Gridiron
Classic, January 25. Please purchase at least one ticket. If you cannot
attend, your ticket will send a student from Atlantic High School to the
game. Many of these students would not be able to attend otherwise. Service
Above Self Award, October 29, Old School Square, 11:30 a.m. This is a very
important event for our club each year. Please note the time, and try to be
there.
Emmett Gumm also reminds us that our Entertainment Books are here and
available for $30.00 each. This is a fundraiser, and a substantial savings
to those of you who buy the book. Look them over, and see how much savings
they offer.
Mark Denkler introduced our guest speaker, who to most of us needs no
introduction, Joe Gillie, Director of Old School Square Cultural Arts Center.
He comes to us with very "colorful" credentials. He has been in the arts in
Palm Beach County for 26 years. During that time he has worked as a
performer at the Royal Palm Dinner Theatre and as a performer, scenic artist
and Public Relations Director at the State Theater of Florida. He taught
Drama and Public Speaking at Lynn University for six years. He is also an
award-winning artist in acrylic medium. An interesting fact about Joe is,
before coming to South Florida, he performed extensively throughout the U. S.
in the first national tour of "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" with Alexis
Smith. Joe resides in Delray Beach, where he is restoring a historic home.
His hobbies include painting, roller blading, and collecting wooden decoys.
Since assuming the position of Director of Old School Square, nine years ago,
Joe Gillie has made a miraculous change in the arts for Delray Beach. This
complex is a beautiful anchor for the downtown area of our All-America City.
Joe told us that they held 1,400 events there last year; planning 2,000
events this year.
Joe's main concern is an Education Program for the community. Since our
public schools cannot offer the kind of arts program our children deserve, he
is striving to offer this at Old School Square. For many of these children,
this is the first exposure to the Arts. His hope is to get the children
involved, with performers, painters, etc. He hopes to bring in more world
renowned programs.
In November, a Carousel Exhibit will be at Old School Square. There will be
a carousel for the "kids of all ages" to ride. Some of the other events
planned will be: October 25, movies in the Pavilion; December 24, 25, The
Nutcracker; December 26, Sleeping Beauty (really performed on ice)! Joe gave
two free tickets away for The Nutcracker performance. The lucky winner was
Jim Blocker. Since he is new in town, and never experienced a performance
there, he is really in for a treat!
A bit of good news is a proposed parking garage adjacent to Old School Square
(a much needed amenity). Many of our Rotary members work closely with Joe
Gillie at Old School Square. Among the volunteers is Bruce Galloway, Mickey
Manning and Lula Butler.
NEXT WEEK: Our speaker is Sheri Pittman, Palm Beach County Sports Institute,
Special Projects Coordinator. She will be speaking to us about the
possibility of developing an Olympic Program, using Lake Ida. Be here to
learn more about it!
Our Greeter for next week will be none other than Art NeJame.
