ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 1, 2002
President-elect Mark Denkler did a fine job of leading our meeting today.
Steve Bates gave a lovely invocation, followed by Jimmy Weatherspoon leading
our singing. Bruce Williams, each week the members remark on "the touch of
class" you add to our meetings, with your lovely renditions on the piano.
We sang Happy Birthday to Nancy Jackson, who graciously donated $25.00; and
Happy Anniversary to Rich Connell, for five years of marriage.
Bruce Wenzel welcomed our visiting Rotarian, Stephen Coleman, from Flushing,
NY. Barnie Shuhi presented our visitor with our club banner. Since Mr.
Coleman just bought a place in our area, we probably will be seeing him
often; welcome. John Arnold sent in two make ups; thank you, John.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report. Her best comment was:
"at this time, there's a glimmer of hope."
Fred Bonardi, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $111.00. Bruce Wenzel,
again had the winning ticket for the draw of the ace of spades. Well, since
he did not win, the pot now exceeds $475.00.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: District Seminar, this coming weekend; more attendees needed.
Entertainment Books are here, and available. Service Above Self Award,
October 29, 11:30 a.m., Old School Square (in front of front entrance, for
ceremony; lunch served in gym, following ceremony). Rotary Board Meeting,
Tuesday, 7:30 a. m; all members welcome.
David Armstrong had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Sheri
Pittman. Sheri is a very enthusiastic lady with impressive credentials. She
holds a Juris Doctorate degree from the Georgetown University Law Center,
where she was the Administrative Editor of The Tax Lawyer. She also has a B.
A. degree in English from Santa Clara University. She taught English while
in the Peace Corps. Sheri has been President of USA Table Tennis, since
1999. As North America's Continental Vice President, she serves on the
International Table Tennis Federation's Executive Board and Olympic
Commission. Prior to moving to Florida, Ms. Pittman was a founding partner
of the law firm Soderberg & Pittman.
Today, Ms. Pittman's primary duties as the Special Projects Manager with the
Palm Beach County Sports Institute include working with various national
governing bodies and the United States Olympic Committee to enhance athletic
opportunities for youth throughout the County. The Sports Institute expects
to be named the local operator for a USOC designated Community Olympic
Development Program in 2002. USA Canoe/Kayak has agreed to work with the
Sports Institute to create grassroots development and feeder programs for
kayaking throughout the County. Ms. Pittman will become the CODP Manager
once the Sports Institute receives the CODP designation. ( I heard "through
the grapevine" that Lake Ida is a prospective body of water for this event.)
Our Greeter today wore a warm smile, a warm handshake and a warm hello to
all; none other than Art NeJame. Art, we thank you for a good job. We are
looking forward to seeing Nancy King as Greeter next week.
