ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH, FL
October 8, 2002

President Pat Archer was back with us today; first presiding over a 7:30 a.m.
board meeting, then, the regular noon meeting. She also spent her weekend at
the District Conference, along with six other of our members. Pat, we do
appreciate your dedication, and a special thank you to all those who were
able to attend the conference. We continue to be an outstanding club in the
District, thanks to those of our membership who so selflessly give their time
and talent. At this time, we want to thank Art NeJame for donating the
raffle prize our club took to the conference. It was a beautifully framed
poster of FotoFusion 2002. Our club also won the Rotary Distinguished Award.

While we are giving accolades, how about Bruce Williams at the piano each
week; also, the cheerful smile of our song leader, Jimmy Weatherspoon? Dave
O'Connell, thank you for the prayer, that should be the prayer of all
Rotarians!

Harvey Brown welcomed the one visiting Rotarian, Dorian Trauger, from the
Boynton-Lantana Club. (Then, Harvey just disappeared, without paying a fine
for leaving early!)

Leo Phillips had as his guest, Mert Anderson. Ms. Anderson is a Rotarian
from Morristown, NJ. She is being presented at this time, for membership
into our club. Her classification is Executive Search. Consider this the
first publication.

Roger Cope, our newest member, was inducted today, by Emmett Gumm. Roger, we
welcome you, and hope to "put you to work immediately!" (Em, we waited,
breathlessly, for "where the rubber meets the road," what happened?)

Lou Cucci served as Sergeant at Arms, collecting a whopping $208.00 Much of
this was due to Gerry Meeks and David Van Gorp having birthdays. Also, Dave
O'Connell is celebrating 49 years of marriage, donating $49.00. Dave Van
Gorp is also celebrating 32 years of marriage. (David Van Gorp donated a
total of $89.00. He also wrote a lovely letter to the club, which President
Pat read to us.) Congratulations to each of you.

We had two of our members doing make ups: Leo Phillips, (five times), and
John Arnold. I won't mention the AWOL's, you know who you are!

Entertainment Books are awaiting you. If you will take the time to thumb
through one of them, you will see you can recuperate your investment the
first time you use it. This is a fundraiser for the club; let's all
participate.

Community Service Project: October 23, (WED.) our club will be serving as
waiters for the Community Unity Potluck Dinner. This will be bringing two
associations together for a social. We need eight people to volunteer to
wear the Rotary apron and hat, and to serve. It will consume no more than 2
1/2 hours of your time. This should be a fun project. Please see Lula
Butler for details.

Service Above Self Award: October 29, 11:45 a. m, Old School Square (front
entrance, facing Atlantic Avenue).  Leon Weekes will be honored on that day;
let's all be there on time, to pay tribute to an outstanding citizen of our
community. Lunch will be served thereafter, in the gym.

Christmas Party: December 5, Delray Beach Golf Club. Please mark your
calendar now.

Lyn Huckle held the winning ticket to draw a card. The pot exceeds $500.00
now. Lyn also is involved, as a Rotarian, in the Literacy Coalition. She
now holds a certificate for this. If you wish to be in this, please contact
her.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave her "best" stock market report. She did advise us
that consumer staples are up. Georgina, thanks for your positive attitude
each week.

Our guest speakers today were new members Fred Runkel and Jim Blocker.

Jim Blocker was born in Chicago, raised in Cincinnati, OH. He is a Software
Engineer. He owns a Web Hosting/Design Service. He and his wife Barbara,
have been married six years and are the proud parents of two dogs. Among his
hobbies, Jim holds his private pilot license, HAM Radio license, and scuba
dives. We must thank Jim for putting together our club's website. He, along
with Rich Connell's assistance, is doing a terrific job. He will give us
more details on his work, at another time. Jim, we appreciate all your great
work for the club.

Fred Runkel is retired, and enjoying it. Fred was born in Manhattan. Among
his first occupations, was a "swimmer clown." Sounds like fun. In 1940, he
acquired his Naval Aviator Wings. He spent 30 years in the Navy, flying off
the ships! Afterwards, he says he became a playboy! Then, somehow, he
finally had to go to work. He and his bride of 30 years, go on many cruises.
 Seems like this man should live on a houseboat.  Fred, welcome to our club;
sounds like you've had an exciting life.

We are waiting to hear about David Armstrong's life! Time did not permit him
to speak. Dave, you are not off the hook!!
