ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH, FL
October 15, 2002
Today was another outstanding meeting; some of our snowbirds are returning,
such as John Arnold, of Brainerd, MN.
President Pat Archer presided over the meeting. Nancy King read a lovely
prayer, written by a fellow Rotarian's wife. It should be the prayer of
every Rotarian, worldwide. Jimmy Weatherspoon, in his usual jovial mood,
lead the singing.
Bruce Williams, since you had already left, you do not know that you were
honored with a wonderful round of applause. Rich Connell, being a fellow
musician, lead the tribute.
Harvey Brown welcomed our visiting Rotarians; there were five of them. Lew
Currier (Mr. Whatever), gave our banner to Rex Welton, of Charlotte, NC.
Dave Harden did two make ups. We had a few AWOL's; one of them had three!
(Boy, did he get booed!)
Dave Armstrong had his son Adam visiting with us today. George Kientzy had
as his guest, Ed Grove.
Rich Connell, serving as Sergeant at Arms, collected $88.00. Good job Rich.
Sam Aldorfer had the winning ticket, but did not pick the winning card; which
now makes the winnings exceed $550.00.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett had good news to report on the stock market. She was
all smiles; so were the rest of us.
We had as our guests today, The Student of The Month, Teacher of The Month,
and the students mother. Our student was Anna Berlanga. Ms. Berlanga is
quite an outstanding young lady. Does she ever sleep? I don't see how she
can "cram" so much in a day. It seems she has not lived long enough to
achieve so many things. I will touch lightly on a few of her achievements.
She is ranked #20, in a class of 409; she is fluent in at least three
languages; she is very active on the Debate Team, serving as secretary, then
president; member of National Honor Society; Model United Nations, secretary;
French Club/ French National Honor Society; Young Democrats of America; Drama
Club. She has also achieved many awards and honors. We are very proud to
have Anna Berlanga as our Student of The Month.
Anna chose as the Teacher of The Month, Alexanza Votano. She is a graduate
of Florida State. She has been teaching eight years; five of those at
Atlantic High. One of her extracurricular activities is coaching the Speech
and Debate Teams. When looking at the head table, we weren't sure which was
the teacher, and which was the student.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Community Potluck Dinner, Wednesday, October 23: sponsored by City of Delray
Beach; serving staff will be eight members of our Rotary Club. Lula Butler
is in charge of this, so please contact her to participate. This is a
community project for our club. Those serving, should be at Temple Sinai by
5:30 p.m. It should take no more than 2 1/2 hours.
Service Above Self Award, October 29, 11:45 a. m, Old School Square. As most
of you know, we will be honoring Leon Weekes, a distinguished citizen of
Delray Beach. Lunch will be served in the gym immediately following the
ceremony.
Entertainment Books - Only $30.00; a great gift, or big savings for personal
use.
Barnie Shuhi gave her monthly report, with highlights from our Rotary
Magazine. Barnie, thanks again.
Our guest speaker was introduced by David Armstrong (who just happens to be
Dave's neighbor), Mr. Clifford Jones.
Mr. Jones works for The Center for Arts, in Boca Raton. Mr. Jones is former
CEO of China Communications, a consulting group he founded in 1984. He has
over thirty-five years experience in the international marketplace.
Being very active in community organizations, he is the past chairman of the
Centre for the Arts at Mizner Park, past chairman of the Boca Pops and past
chairman of the Boca Chamber's International Committee. Mr. Jones is a
recipient of the 2001 Leading Men of Palm Beach County Award.
Mr. Jones is very enthused about all the wonderful things being done in Boca
Raton, regarding the arts, such as the Boca Museum; the Amphitheater (to open
in thirty days); and the planned Concert Hall. The whole concept is to
"bring the community together" with the arts.
Next week: Our speaker is a mystery; our Greeter will be none other than
Bruce Galloway. Thanks to all you greeters who make it so pleasant for our
visitors, as well as the regular members.
