ROTARY RAMBLINGS

ROTARY CLUB DELRAY BEACH
October 22, 2002

We enjoyed another exciting Rotary Meeting, presided over by President Pat
Archer. Hack Allen gave the invocation, followed by Gerry Meeks leading the
singing, accompanied by Bruce Williams on piano. We had two birthdays; Hack
Allen and Roy Simon, both donating $20.00 each to the club. Jess Sowards,
celebrating his eighth wonderful year of marriage, donated eight dollars. We
wish all of you the very best.

Bruce Wenzel welcomed our visiting Rotarians, and our guests. Sam Aldorfer,
from Lancaster, PA, keeps winning the ticket to pick a card for the winner of
the green hat. At this time, the winnings exceed $560.00. (Sam, you keep
increasing my odds of winning; thanks.) Leo Phillips donated an unclaimed
banner. It was good to see Bill Adams back from France. When can we get him
to have a program about his trip?

Bill Whitworth had two visitors with him; Mert Anderson and Marilyn Ochs.
This is the first publication for Marilyn Stern Ochs, as a new member.

Sylvia Pecaro had a special visitor with her, her daughter Rachel. Rachel is
an eight year old aspiring singer. She certainly entertained all of us,
singing I Believe. Thank you Rachel; also to you Sylvia, for sharing her
with us.

Tony Allerton did a great job as Sergeant at Arms; he collected a total of
$123.00

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett in her ever positive report, stated the market had
"pulled back today." Keep it up, you may just turn that market around yet!

ANNOUNCEMENT!!! Remember, next week, 11:45 a.m., Old School Square, we are
holding our annual Service Above Self Award. Please be there on time; front
walkway of Old School Square. We are honoring one of Delray Beach's finest
citizens, Leon M. Weekes. Our distinguished, former recipients will be
invited as well (or the families of the deceased). They are: Barbara Dodge
Smith; C. Spencer Pompey; Alexander Simon, Jr. (Sandy, to those who know and
love him; brother to Ernie and Roy, fellow Rotarians); Frances Fontaine
Bourque; and Dr. E. Monroe Farber. For all the new members who might not
know these people, this is quite a roster of distinguished residents of
Delray Beach who have all played a great part in making Delray Beach the
wonderful All-America City we live in today. I will elaborate on Mr. Weekes'
career in next week's newsletter.

Since I was involved in another scholarship fundraiser last evening, I am a
day late sending out the newsletter. However, this gives me the opportunity
to report how well our Community Service Project went this evening. We had
seven Rotarians from our club, don chef hats and aprons, wear our Rotary Club
badges, and serve dinner to a hall full of hungry people. The city of Delray
Beach sponsored a Community Potluck Dinner, inviting our mayor, David Schmit,
and our city commissioners to share with two chosen communities, to get
acquainted, and to share ideas and some mighty good food. Lula Butler, a
fellow Rotarian, headed this quite successful project. Among the "Rotarian
Chefs" were: Hume Rennick, Art NeJame, Jess Sowards, Georgina Kerr-Jarrett,
Nancy King, Pat Archer and Ellie Lowery. I would like to add, two of our
city commissioners are Rotarians, one of them being our president, Pat
Archer, and Alberta McCarthy, Sunrise Rotary Club. We had a ball, and a free
dinner!

David Armstrong, Program Chairman for October, introduced our guest speaker,
a truly lovely person, a good friend, totally committed to her cause, Edith
Thompson. Edith is founder of Community Neighborhood Helping, Inc. Edith
grew up in Delray Beach, attended Palm Beach Community College. Edith is the
proud mother of three sons, who help her in her commitment.
After living elsewhere, Edith returned to Delray Beach, seeing her community
deteriorating, and many of it's people in dire need. After much prayer and
thought, she "got up, went out" and starting helping those less fortunate.
At first, she was collecting day old bread from Publix, and distributing it
to the needy. Publix then started donating other foods to her for her cause.
Other food distributors have heard of her project and now donate food. Her
group of volunteers now exceeds forty. She formed a Seniors Group, which
meets every Monday to help. She now has a Children's Scholarship Fund for
young people to be able to attend college; she has a Prison Outreach Program;
she has formed a dance team for youth, called Angels of Inspiration. Now,
she has incorporated donating clothing into the program; (donated by local
merchants). This vivacious young woman also holds a full-time job with USPS.
She mentioned that Borton Volvo donated a van to her cause, allowing her to
be able to carry more food and clothing to the needy. Edith truly practices
Service Above Self!
