ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
November 5, 2003
Wow, did we have an exciting day! As we entered Ellie's Flamingo Room, we
were greeted by a well dressed gentleman, with an extended hand, and a big
smile on his face. This was none other than Ace Pilot and Computer Whiz, Jim
Blocker. President Pat Archer presided over the meeting; Jimmy Weatherspoon
led the "heavenly choir," with Bruce Williams performing magic on the
keyboard. Jim Atchison sure did make us stop and think about our world
situation, and ourselves as Rotarians, before he led a lovely prayer. This
man would make a terrific minister. (For those who do not know Jim, he is a
retired minister, and a good one too.)
We sang Happy Anniversary to Candace Etzler, who donated $5.00 to happy five
years; we also sang to Emmett Gumm who donated $22.00 for a lovely 22 year
marriage. Congratulations to you and your spouses. By the way, we sang
Happy Birthday to the guy in the pink coat (Bruce Wenzel). Bruce, many more
happy, healthy years.
We had the pleasure of Wally Doud welcoming all our visitors; we welcome you
back Wally! It's good to see your smiling face among us. We had about seven
visiting Rotarians, from as far away as Germany.
All of these had visited us before; welcome; keep coming back.
Fred Bonardi wore two hats today. First, he made us all happy by relating
that the market was up, as he spoke. (This is a first for him in a while.)
Then he, as Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $125.00. We had make ups
by Bill Talen 4 x's (Bill, it's time to head south); Tom Cook 4 x's, Lou
Cucci, Gerry Meeks, Nancy Owens and Dave Harden. We thank each of you for
taking the time to help keep our attendance up. Rel Moorcroft paid for a
banner we did not give away.
Stormi Norem reminded all of us to vote; "early and often." He also had a
handful of "registration cards" for all of those who needed one (wonder where
they came from). This man should have been a comedian instead of a funeral
director!
Tony Allerton, "Mr. Green Hat" held the winning ticket, to draw a card from
the deck. Since he did not win, my chances are getting better each week!
Emmett Gumm had the pleasure of inducting two new members into our club
today. The new members are Marilyn Ochs, Director of Seasonal Programs, at
Gulfstream School; Mert Anderson, owning her own business as Executive Search
Recruiter. We warmly welcome both you ladies into our Rotary Club; now, we
are looking for a job for each of you! Their sponsor is Leo Phillips.
President Archer read a letter our club received from Leon Weekes. It was a
letter of gratitude, thanking our club for honoring him as our Service Above
Self Award recipient for this year.
Leo Phillips, our Program Chairman for November, noting November is Rotary
Foundation Month, introduced our guest speaker, Roxanna Jonsson Trinka. Ms.
Trinka serves as Area Chairperson for the Polio Eradication Campaign. She is
an active member of the Boca Raton Sunset Club and a member of the Paul
Harris Society, District 6930.
In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus, one of the most ambitious humanitarian
programs ever undertaken by a private entity. PolioPlus was in large part,
the catalyst for the World Health Assembly's adoption in 1988 of the goal of
polio eradication. Rotary takes pride in its commitment to help achieve a
polio-free world by 2005.
Ms. Trinka spoke with us about Rotary Eradication of Polio by 2005. If each
member of our club donated $80.00, we would help to achieve our goal of $80
million. Since 1988, polio cases have dropped by 99.8 percent, thanks in
substantial measure to Rotary's significant financial contributions and
mobilization of volunteers.
In 2001, there were 600 cases reported, in 10 countries. Let's finish the
job we promised to complete; let's eradicate the dreaded disease of polio.
Together, we can deliver to all children everywhere, a lasting, special gift;
a world free of polio.
UPCOMING EVENT: Holiday Party, December 5. (That's only one month away!!!!)
Our club will be holding its annual holiday party at Delray Beach Golf
Course. The price for meal and entertainment will be $40.00 per person. It
sounds like an exciting event, and a great way to wish all our fellow
Rotarians Happy Holidays. Also, remember the Entertainment Books, great gift
ideas for those hard to buy for.
This Monday, at 5:00 p. m, the Fundraiser Committee will meet at the Fire
House Meeting Room (not a restaurant, really the firehouse) on Atlantic
Avenue. For all those interested in helping with fundraisers, please try to
attend, or give input to those on the committee.
Next week: Jess Sowards will give a Treasurer's Report, and the Paul Harris
Fellow Society will be discussed. This will be especially interesting to new
members. Our designated Greeter for next week is Mark Denkler. Thanks again
Jim for a great job today.
Quiz: Name the only sport in which the ball is always in possession of the
team on defense, and the offensive team can score without touching the ball.
(Answer next week, maybe.)
