ROTARY RAMBLING
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
      January 7, 2003

Here we are in a new year, a time for reflecting on the year just passed.
It's a good time for all of us to count our many, many blessings. I hope you
enjoyed your holidays even half as much as I did. I wish each of you a
healthy, happy and prosperous new year. Now, let's get to work and raise
funds for our scholarship recipients! (As well as those in need.)

It was great to see a packed room today, with President Pat Archer presiding
over a fantastic meeting. Hack Allen gave a lovely invocation. Our jubilant
song leader, Jimmy Weatherspoon, led us in song, with new song books. (I
didn't know we had worn out the old ones; everyone should know Smile by now.)
As always, Bruce Williams always entertains us with his wonderful music.

Our birthdays were Leo Phillips, donating $58.00, and Bill Talen donating
$78.00. Bill, I know you cannot be that old, were you paying for Leo also?
We thank both of you and wish you many more healthy ones.

Harvey Brown greeted a room full of guests. There were nine visiting
Rotarians, from the frigid north. We also had Dr. Don Thorpe and Rev. Andy
Hall back with us. These gentlemen are former, very active Rotarians, from
our club. Rich Connell had as his guest today, Mike Borton. We had three
make ups: Hume Rennick, Lyn Huckle and Gerry Meeks; thank each of you. Tony
Allerton paid for a banner, given to Terry Mattingly, of St. Mathews, KY
(suburb of Louisville).

Emmett Gumm had the pleasure of installing another new member today. He is
David Richards; his classification is insurance. His sponsor is Anne Bright.

Fred Bonardi "wore two hats" today. He collected a whopping $225.00, as
Sergeant at Arms. Fred also gave a stock market report. To sum it up:
"today the market is flat."

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett paid to announce The Heart of Delray Valentine Auction,
sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, on February 13, 5:30 p.m., Old School
Square Gym. The proceeds go to the Chamber of Commerce Education Fund. (You
might even spot a familiar face there, B.W.)

President Archer read a note regarding our dear friend and member, Ron Wills.
Ron is now 97, and not well. Let's all send Ron a note of cheer. Ron's
address is: 204 Morningside Circle, Birmingham, AL 35213. His phone is:
205-879-6089.

It's with regret that President Archer read Nancy Jackson's letter of
resignation from our club. Nancy has retired from her job with the City of
Delray Beach. She plans to travel and be with her family. We are all going
to miss Nancy, especially me! She did such a splendid job writing the
bulletin, when I was unavailable. She never said no to anything she was
asked to do within our club. Nancy, enjoy your retirement.

Mark Denkler introduced a dynamic speaker for today, Mr. Ogie Shaw. Mr. Shaw
is a fitness expert and instructor. He is Executive Director of Community
Fitness Leaders, a training program for health and fitness professionals, and
he is president of Ogie Shaw Fitness, in Beaverton, Oregon. He is a graduate
of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a BA in both Speech
and Physical Education. (Both were apparent.)

Mr. Shaw holds a Second Degree Black Belt. He won first place in the
Carolina Karate Tournament. He served four years in military, where he won
medals of commendation.

Mr. Shaw's expertise is training physicians, physical therapists, and
physical educators in the use of Isokinetic-Aerobic exercise. He gave us
statistics on how poorly physical fit our nation is. This includes our
children, which is so sad. He sure held the attention of our group, even for
a long time after the meeting. Maybe, just maybe, he gave a "wake up" call
to some of us. Don't forget to include exercise and proper diet in your new
year resolutions! See you next week at "Ellie's feast buffet."

I'm looking for volunteers to help hold a fantastic Bingo Party again this
year. Let's do better than last year; we can! The party is booked for March
20, 2003, Ellie's Flamingo Room. Please put it on your new calendar!
