ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 14, 2003
Our meetings seem to get better and better; definitely bigger! We had a
"full house" again today. President Pat Archer presided over our meeting;
Rev. Andy Hall led the invocation. He has such a sense of humor, I'm sure
God smiles when Andy prays. Our singing was led by none other than our own
leader, Jimmy Weatherspoon. (How many of you noticed our new song books?
We've had them a couple of weeks now.) As always, we appreciate Bruce
Williams and his wonderful music.
Bruce Wenzel, back from the frozen north, warmly greeted eleven "traveling
snowbirds." He also noted our visiting former member, Don Thorpe, DVM.
"Doctor Don" amused us with one of his jokes, with his great accents. Don,
we sure miss you entertaining us on a regular basis. He also noted those
members who took the time to do make ups. They were Hume Rennick, Lou Cucci
and Jim Blocker. By the way, Jim, it sure was good to see your smiling face
back with us; hope you can stay.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report. Of course, when she
gives it, it is up. She feels the market is "starting to come back."
Lyn Huckle reminded us of a seminar on Adult Literacy, at JFK, on February 1,
2003, from 9:00 to 4:00 p.m. Lyn also handed her position as our
representative on Adult Literacy to our new member Diane Pacheco. Diane is a
professional in this field; Lyn will be her assistant. We are so fortunate
to have such professionals in our club.
Bill Arnst presented our banner today. Ernie Simon held the winning ticket
to draw for the green hat. Well, since he did not draw the winning card, the
winnings exceed $141.00 now.
President Pat Archer told the audience of our visit, and board meeting last
Wednesday morning, held at the Child Care Center. We were treated to
breakfast by the staff, after our meeting; then, went on tour of the
facility. This is such a wonderful service provided by dedicated people in
our Delray area. If you need a hug, go visit the Child Care Center; every
child there, almost 150, will hug you.
Leo Phillips announced how well we are coming along with our commitment to
Polio Plus. At this time, 22 members have donated a total of $3,394.00.
Next week, those who have met their goal will be printed in our newsletter;
will you be among them? Let's do our part to eradicate Polio!
January is Rotary Awareness Month. This is a terrific time to invite a
prospective member.
BINGO PARTY! Please put the date on your calendar; March 20, 2003, 6:00 p.
m, Ellie's Flamingo Room. We will have a choice from three entrees; a night
of winning, winning, winning great cash prizes, as well as silent auctions.
I put out a plea for helpers, got eleven thus far. I am overwhelmed at this
response; that is what Rotary is all about! We are going to need great
prizes; merchants, shop owners, we need your gifts!! (George Kientzy was the
first one to commit.)
Mark Denkler introduced our guest speaker. He is John Landry, a handsome
young man that is Bethesda's new Director of Planned Giving and Major Gifts.
He has fifteen years of experience in capital fundraising for nonprofit
organizations. He gave a brief history of Bethesda Hospital, a Nonprofit
Hospital. As he was speaking, he noted a number of our members as being
members of the hospital board. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful
hospital so near us.
Mr. Landry explained how a person can perpetuate your values through
charitable giving to help Bethesda continue its mission of caring health care
in a nonprofit community spirit. For more information on this, you may call
the Foundation office at 737-7733, extension 5448.
NEXT WEEK: You are in for a treat, especially all you new members. Our own
Egon Kurz, a renowned motivational speaker will be our guest speaker. (For
those who do not know him, as yet, he is one of the "quiet" guys at the first
table.)
