ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
January 21, 2003
With season in full swing, we sure had another full house. There were about
15 visiting Rotarians. It also seems that our members are in better
attendance in season; anyone have an answer for that?
President Pat Archer presided very professionally (think she ought to run for
political office). Hack Allen gave the invocation. We had a surprise song
leader; Steve Rich. (I think Jimmy is saving his voice; maybe for a concert,
huh?) Steve Rich also donated $10.00, honoring his and Helen's wedding
anniversary. Bruce Williams, as always, entertained us royally.
Harvey Brown greeted all the visitors, heroically trying to decipher some of
the handwritten visitor cards. Rev. Andy Hall presented the banner,
commemorating his 50 years in Rotary, to Jim Kenary, from Worcester, MA,
where the temperature is 0 degrees. We received a banner from Rich Hermann,
of Hampton, NJ. We had Don Lurch back with us today; must be too frigid in
D. C. We also had our Exchange Student, Ollie Turnan, from Finland, visiting
with us. For those of you that have not met Ollie, you are missing knowing a
warm, friendly young man.
Fred Bonardi, wearing two hats again, gave the stock report, and also the
Sergeant at Arms report. He, in his optimistic frame of mind, reported at
this time the market is up 3%. It is uncertain times in the market. Fred
also collected a total of $96.00 for the club. (He also told a clean joke.)
Dave Harden did two make ups.
President Archer read a letter from the Florida Citrus Foundation, thanking
our club for supporting disadvantaged children to see the Rotary sponsored
Citrus Bowl, in Orlando. She also read a note from one of our former
scholarship recipients, Rachael Klinger (?), who has now graduated and is a
very productive citizen. Rachael thanked our club for helping make it
possible for her education.
Bill Adams introduced our Student of the Month, Adrian Valez. This is a fine
looking young man, who is also bilingual. He attends both Atlantic High
School and South Tech. He will receive his diploma from both. He is
studying auto body repair, and recently was allowed to help paint the "big"
fire truck in Boynton. He has decided to become a Fire Fighter. Of course,
Bill Adams is excited about this, hoping to lure him to Delray's Fire
Department.
The Teacher of the Month is Morisa Jo Fontaine, who at Atlantic High School,
is Tech Prep/Career Development Teacher/Advisor. She had high praises for
Adrian. We wish both of you the best.
Diane Pacheco held the winning ticket to allow her to pick from the deck, to
win in excess of $175.00. Diane, for your information, you picked the card
next to the Ace of Spades!
Our guest speaker today was none other than our own member, Egon Kurz. Egon
has a wit about him that is incomparable. He has written a book of poems
called The Stuff of Life. Egon read excerpts from his latest book that kept
us all in stitches. I recommend this book to all who want a lighthearted
laugh or two. He sold the book after the meeting, donating two dollars from
each book to our club. Thank you Egon. Also, he has been a Rotarian since
1986!
