ROTARY RAMBLINGS
DELRAY BEACH ROTARY CLUB
January 28, 2003
Did anyone speak with our Greeter today? I saw him standing there giving a
message, without saying a word. (For those who were not there, a life-size
cardboard cutout of Bill Adams, our Delray Beach Fire Marshal, was there to
greet us.) I guess this was his stand-in.
President Pat Archer presided over a very enthusiastic meeting. These
meetings just keep getting better; if you aren't attending, you're missing a
treat.
Lula Butler gave a beautiful invocation. Someone commented that she is vying
for Rev. Andy Hall's job. Wally Doud did a terrific job of leading the
"choir" acappella. Where is Bruce Williams? We sure missed his music.
We had birthdays celebrated; Jim Blocker, donating $21.00, and Ray Ripley,
donating $10.00. We also got an IOU from Lyn Huckle, for her birthday.
(Lyn, next week they will remind you; we will sing again to you.)
Fred Bonardi gave the stock report, commenting that at the time, the market
was up 50 points. He informed us that the "Feds" meet today; also the
country is in an uncertainty at this point.
Harvey Brown welcomed a myriad of guests from around the world, including
about seven guests of Leo Phillips. Ernie Simon presented our banner to Tom
Armstrong, of Michigan. (Can't blame him for coming south.)
Sergeant at Arms, Ernie Simon collected a total of $110.00. Wally Doud held
the winning ticket to draw from the deck. At this time, the winnings exceed
$200.00. Looks like a good time to win!
President Archer informed the club that Jim Blocker, our computer whiz kid,
has offered computer tech support to anyone, for one half hour, for a $40.00
donation to our Rotary Club. This is a very generous offer. Have you ever
had to pay for tech support?? If so, you will know this is a bargain!
Our big surprise today was that Rel Moorcroft presented his lovely wife
Regie, the Paul Harris Fellow Award. She thought she was coming to lunch
with a girlfriend, Lyn Huckle; what a wonderful surprise.
REMINDER: Fundraisers- March 1, Wine Tasting Party, Old School Square. March
20, Annual Bingo Party. I have been informed that Ernie Simon will be emcee,
and Stormi Norem will call Bingo. With this slate of "stars" we will all be
winners!
President Archer announced that we need two more volunteers for our role as
servers for the City of Delray Beach sponsored Potluck Dinner. If you can
help out with this on February 12, Old School Square, please call Lula
Butler, or Pat Archer. Lula is heading up this affair.
Today, Leo Phillips introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Heather Frazer. She is
one of our country's leading scholars, speaking on "Understanding Islam: A
Brief Introduction."
Heather Frazer is Professor of History at Florida Atlantic University, where
she teaches courses on the History of the Arab World, History of Modern
India, and the British Empire.
She received both her Ph.D and M.A. from Duke University, in South Asian
History and received her B.A. from Connecticut College.
Dr. Frazer astounded us with facts regarding Islam. It's the fastest growing
religion in the world, with 1.2 billion followers; the largest number of
Muslims is in Indonesia. There are seven million Muslims in the United
States. She was so full of information, but a short time to relate it. I
think we should have her come back again and continue her lecture.
Next Week: Wally Doud informs me that our guest speaker will be Rob Moreland,
Division Chief of Delray Fire Brigade. Also, Don Thorp, DVM, (former member
of our club) will be selling his book on the Civil War, Volunteers for Glory,
for twenty dollars, and donating half of the proceeds to Delray Beach Rotary
Club. I have his book; it is full of history.
Members: Please remember our commitment to Polio Plus. Let's help eradicate
Polio by '05!
