ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 11, 2002

It was another fine day in Delray! Our meeting room was packed again! Our
meeting, led by President Pat Archer was another terrific one. Bruce
Williams always greets everyone with his beautiful music as we enter the
doors; makes you want to dance!

Ron Backer gave the devotional, receiving many good remarks from those around
me. (By the way, Ron donated $10.00 to the club for his AWOL's; thanks Ron.)
Steve Rich led the singing, including the old familiar song Let Me Call You
Sweetheart, since it's almost Valentine's Day. Don't forget to do something
special for your favorite Valentine this Friday.

Harvey Brown greeted our visiting Rotarians, which numbered about eleven
today, including Dorian Trauger, all the way from Boynton Beach. We welcome
each of you. Anne Bright presented our banner to Herb Zimmerman, of
Lancaster, PA. He seemed to be among friends, with two other of our
Rotarians being from that area.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave us the stock report. At the time of her report,
The Dow was up 22 points, the S&P up 2 points, the NASDAQ up 11 points. She
is a very positive lady, among so many negatives.

We had make ups done by Gerry Meeks, Hume Rennick, Nancy King and Nancy
Owens. We thank each of you for your dedication to our club, and to Rotary.

Roy Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected $116.00. Our big contributor today
was Art NeJame, donating $35.00, celebrating 35 years in Rotary. Art, we
thank you for the donation, and for your dedication to Rotary for 35 years.
Art is asking all new members to see him to have your picture taken for our
"blue book." He is our official photographer. We will be updating our book
soon; we need your picture!

Leo Phillips informed us that about one-third of our group has contributed to
Polio Eradication Project, contributing, thus far, about $4,000.00. Come on,
let's stamp out Polio by 2005.

Our community project, Delray's Potluck Dinner, sponsored by City of Delray
Beach, headed by Lula Butler, will be Wednesday, February 12. This is a fun
project for our club. I will tell you all about it next week; after we
"serve" the guests.

FUNDRAISER: As you entered the meeting room, most of you were handed an
envelope, with two tickets to our upcoming event on March 1. It is a Wine
Tasting Party. Please respond ASAP to Rel on this project. The committee
needs to know immediately. It will be held in the Ocean View Room at Old
School Square. If you did not receive your tickets, please contact Rel
immediately.

Our guest speaker today was Sandy Simon. Sandy was asked to speak at the
last minute; doing a terrific job. Since he had not arrived when it came
time for him to speak, Ernie, his "big brother" was asked to fill in until
his arrival. I could swear it was a rehearsed act; Sandy entered the room as
Ernie was speaking; their ad-lib was so theatrical; it was hilarious. After
all, those two have had a lifetime to rehearse. (Roy, another brother, was
sitting in the corner, shaking his head.)

Sandy, who most of you know, was a land developer in this area, before his
massive stroke in 1993. God gave Sandy a new act. Doctors declared that
Sandy would never be more than a vegetable after his stroke; he showed them!
He has had a miraculous recovery; with his main goal in life now to help
others to prevent, or to recover from stroke. While recovering from his
stroke, he wrote down all the happy, meaningful events in his life, thus the
book Remembering. This book is an account of the history of South Palm Beach
County, a must for newcomers to the area, and also for us dummies that did
not know the history of our area.

Sandy preceded to write another book entitled A Stroke of Genius. This is a
first hand account of recovering from stroke. This book is being used in
medical classrooms throughout the U. S. He has recently sponsored
symposiums, locally, inviting some of the foremost doctors and therapists on
stroke, in our country. He is fighting for our lives.

He has now been commissioned by the city of Highland Beach, to write the
history of their city. He has had lots of fun "digging" up information for
his latest book. He begins about 15,000 years ago, up to the present day. I
am quite eager to read his latest endeavor. (I also hear he is writing a
steamy novel.)

Sandy has a great sense of humor. There were visiting Rotarians at our
table, laughing and asking if he is a comedian. Looks like along with his
stroke, God has enhanced Sandy's sense of humor; what a stroke of genius!
