ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 18, 2003
After spending hours of frustration on the phone with Hewlett-Packard, I hope
my computer is "well" now. I tried to download Norton Anti-virus 2003,
online, but wound up with much more than a virus; total confusion! My thanks
to all of you that tried to help out; especially Bill Arnst, who delivered
his "Windows 98" to me; to Rel and Georgina, who offered their computers to
me. Also, I bugged Jim Blocker, on the phone, for help. He had his own
"bug" to worry about; he was in bed sick, but offered phone help; he is a
trouper.
Our meeting was great, as usual. We were "greeted" by the wonderful music of
Bruce Williams. (We still need a greeter at the front door.) Tony Allerton
gave a lovely invocation. We had the happy Jimmy Weatherspoon leading the
singing.
We sang Happy Birthday to two of our members, Diane Pacheco, who gave $50.00
and to Egon Kurz, who gave $10.00. We must be good, since these people pay
to hear us sing! Happy Birthday to both of you.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock market report. As she mentioned, the
threat of war certainly does affect the stability of our market. Today,
however, the market was up slightly, but still down for the year.
Bruce Wenzel greeted all of our visiting Rotarians and guests. Looks like
more and more are migrating from the North: (can you blame them?) Bev Bowra
had his son Jason visiting from Cincinnati. We also had a familiar face in
the crowd today; Tom Cook. I think "Doc" Don Thorpe is "snowed out" of NC.
He is enjoying our sunshine until the thaw.
Hack Allen presented our banner today, to a Rotarian from Youngstown, OH.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected $158.00 today. John Arnold gave
$5.00, for the safety of his family, in a "big snow storm."
Barnie Shuhi gave a report from the Rotarian magazine. As always, she did a
good job. She is a dedicated Rotarian; thanks Barnie.
Last Wednesday, the City of Delray Beach sponsored their second annual
"Potluck Dinner." This is a "coming together" of two communities for dinner
and sharing ideas. It was held at Old School Square Gym. It was well
attended, and headed up by our own Lula Butler. Our club had the honor of
being the "servers." We had the opportunity to share our "service above
self" motto. The servers were:
Dave and Linda (his spouse) Richards, Bev Bowra, Pat Archer, Mert Anderson,
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett, Diane Pacheco, Ellie Lowery and Mark Denkler (and his
two children; think they had lots of fun). If I missed anyone, please let me
know.
REMEMBER: WINE TASTING PARTY, March 1, 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., Old School
Square, Ocean View Room. (Pat Archer won this facility use at an auction.)
This price is $45.00; please RSVP Rel Moorcroft by February 24.
Today, Wally Doud had the privilege of introducing our guest speaker, Mr.
Chuck Ridley, CEO and Founder of Village Foundation, MAD DADS (Men Against
Destruction- Defending Against Drugs & Social Disorder. This man has made
such a difference in many people's lives. He has been there; he has
experienced the bad times; he knows where they are "coming from." Mr. Ridley
was raised in Delray Beach; is a well known and respected man in our
community. He stated he has many mentors; including our former police chief
and (and a fellow Rotarian, from our club) Rick Overman. He mentioned many
others that have made a difference in Delray Beach; including many of our
members in attendance today, as well as Sandy Simon. One of his greatest
achievements was the Village Academy; located on the premises of old Carver
High School's football field. This school now has 350 students; when done,
will have kindergarten through grade twelve.
Mr. Ridley's next endeavor is to keep the "Urban Renewal; not Urban Removal."
He envisions keeping West Atlantic Avenue (west of Swinton) a place with the
"flavor" of the current residents. He has a community plan to introduce to
CRA and City Commission. This would be such a terrific endeavor, giving
Delray Beach even more diversity.
After the meeting, people were asking how to become involved with Mr.
Ridley's programs; here is how to reach him: 561-276-7755. Please ask for
his assistant, Barbara, at extension 206.
