ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
February 25, 2003
Our meeting was called to order by President Pat Archer. Again, we had great
attendance. Ernie Simon gave the invocation. We certainly missed the lovely
music of Bruce Williams, but Jimmy Weatherspoon bravely led us in singing
anyway.
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett "bravely" gave the stock market report. She tried to
relate to us how the uncertainty of our position of war is affecting how the
market reacts.
We had a day of birthdays: Bruce Galloway ($12.00), Bill Adams ($50.00),
Wally Doud ($78.00) and Shirley Clark ($25.00). We wish each of you a Happy
Birthday and thank you for your gifts.
Bruce Wenzel welcomed five visiting Rotarians. Our visitor of Leeds, England
gave us a picture of himself, displaying our banner along with many others at
his club. Shirley Clark paid for our banner today. We had make ups by Lyn
Huckle, Hume Rennick, Jim Blocker and Emmett Gumm.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $300.00, mainly our
gifts from our birthday people. (We actually had $298.00, when Bruce
Galloway bumped it up to $300.00.)
Our "green hat" is now over $319.00. Arthur Reef had the winning ticket for
the draw. Well, now it's one less card! It's amazing how elusive that ace
of spades is.
Jim Blocker is still offering "computer tutoring" for those who wish to
donate $40.00 to our club. This is a great deal for those of you who need
more computer literacy. Jim, we thank you for your generosity.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Rotary Wine Tasting Party, Saturday, March 1, Ocean View Room,
Old School Square, 7:00 p.m. If you have not paid for your tickets, please
call Rel Moorcroft, immediately: 495-5376.
Mark Denkler had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker for today. He
is Harvey Brown, Jr. Harvey is a dynamic young man, growing up in Delray
Beach. He recently passed the Bar Exam, becoming an attorney, as well as his
many other attributes; among them a passion for flying. He is employed by
the Harvey Brown Insurance Agency; his proud father, Harvey Brown, Sr., is
our fellow Rotary member.
Mr. Brown mesmerized us with his knowledge of NASA, and his knowledge of the
space program. This has been a passion of his since early childhood. He
updated us on space technology, from the beginning of our space program, to
the present day shuttle tragedy of our Columbia. One of his biggest concerns
is lack of funding the space program receives, which is less than 5% of our
national budget. He quoted that every $1.00 spent on space technology,
becomes $7.00 benefit to the public. I f you doubt this, just watch a few TV
ads, touting "space age technology."
It was a real pleasure to talk with this brilliant young man. He should
become a public speaker and go into the schools, encouraging our kids to get
involved in this space program; they are our future!
ANNOUNCEMENT: BINGO PARTY, MARCH 20, ELLIE'S FLAMINGO ROOM. Cocktails 6:30
p.m., Dinner at 7:00 p.m. Price for this event is $50.00 per person, with
one drink ticket per person. We are looking for raffle prizes; please, those
of you who own businesses, volunteer a raffle prize for us. We have a letter
for you to present to business owners, to acquire prizes for this event. I
am asking for help from each of you, to make this another successful event.
Rel Moorcroft is requesting RSVP by March 18. If you purchase your ticket by
March 11, you will receive an extra bingo card! Lyn Huckle is donating the
Grand Bingo Prize of $500.00. This should be an incentive for all of us.
Shirley Clark is now our official Greeter. Please cooperate with her if she
asks you to be a greeter.
