ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 4, 2003
Our President-elect, Mark Denkler presided over another great Rotary Meeting,
in the absence of our President, Pat Archer. (Mark, practice is good for
you.)
Emmett Gumm gave a fine invocation; Wally Doud, along with Bruce Williams'
accompaniment, led the singing.
We were informed that Lew Currier's sister has passed on. Lew and family,
our kindest sympathy goes out to you.
Harvey Brown (Sr.) had an easy job today, he only greeted three visiting
Rotarians. (Has the thaw started in the North?) Bill Adams paid for a
banner he did not get to give away; we received a banner from Monroe Summer,
of New Haven. We had make ups done by Diane Pacheco and Lula Butler. There
were way too many AWOL's; shame!
Fred Bonardi had the unpleasant job of giving the stock market report today.
As you might guess, the market is down today. He gave some interesting
statistics: oil is at a twelve year high; Treasury is at a 42 year low. Is
anyone surprised?
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, worked hard to bring in $100.00 today. He
had no birthdays to rely on.
ANNOUNCEMENT: The Board of Directors of our Rotary Club will meet next
Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Ellie's Diner. All club members are invited
to attend; please join the group.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Bingo Party, March 20, 6:30 p.m., Ellie's Flamingo Room. We
will have Ernie Simon as emcee; Stormi Norem will call the Bingo numbers. We
will have good monetary winnings; especially the big one: Lyn Huckle is
donating $500.00 for the grand prize Bingo winner. Dinner will be served at
7:00 p.m. The Bingo will start after dinner. We will have fabulous raffle
prizes on display for you to choose from. (These tickets will be sold during
the evening.) If you purchase your admission tickets by March 11, you will
receive an extra bingo card! Please RSVP to Rel Moorcroft, no later than
March 18. I am looking for raffle prizes; please help us out.
Ernie Simon, our Program Chairperson for today, introduced our speaker, Neal
Allen, President of South Palm Beach County, YMCA. We heard Mr. Allen speak
at our meeting about four years ago, when our latest YMCA, DeVos-Blum Family
YMCA of Boynton Beach was in the planning stages. It opened to the public
two years ago. It is a fine facility, located at Old Boynton Beach Blvd.,
and Military Trail.
Mr. Allen gave us a brief history of YMCA. It started in England 157 years
ago; came to America 6 years later. It is a 501C3 charitable organization.
Their purpose: To build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.
After looking over their brochure, I am sure they need to build another
facility in Delray Beach! In 2002, there was a Family Membership of 6,000;
with 30,000 in individual programs. They offer over 100 activities. The
YMCA is the largest provider of child care throughout the U.S. By the way,
if you look at their board of directors, there are quite a few familiar
names, including Ernie Simon and Januarius Styperek, M. D. For more
information: 561-738-9622, or www.ymcaspbc.org. Better yet, go visit the
facility!
Last Saturday evening was a nice party, with about 32-34 people attending the
Wine Tasting Party. It was held in the lovely Ocean View Room of Old School
Square. All those in attendance had an enjoyable evening. Not being a wine
connoisseur, I enjoyed the company.
