ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
March 25, 2003

Our president is back! President Pat Archer presided over our meeting today.
She has been missed the last couple of weeks. Candace Etzler gave a lovely
invocation, very fitting for the state of our world. Wally Doud followed, by
leading us in song; Let There Be Peace on Earth. Bruce Williams always
offers us beautiful renditions on piano.

We sang Happy Birthday to Sam Altdorfer (spelling?); who donated $77.00. We
sang Happy Anniversary to Mark Denkler (LaRonda); fifteen years of marital
bliss. Mark donated $15.00 for this happy occasion. Gentlemen, we wish you
the best, and thank you for your generosity.

Bruce Wenzel had the pleasure of welcoming about five visiting Rotarians.
Nancy King had as her guest today, Ivan Ladinsky, who is Public Information
Officer for Delray Beach.  Wally Doud and Gerry Meeks also did make ups;
thank you.

Sergeant at Arms Candace Etzler "gathered in" a total of $191.00 for today.
Dave O'Connell paid for a banner we did not give away.

For the record, Fred Bonardi gave a stock market report that was up today.
This has not happened for him in some time; congratulations (to all of us).

Today, Emmett Gumm inducted a new member, Conn Fletcher. He is a retired
dentist from Dayton, Ohio, by way of Hilton Head. We welcome you Mr.
Fletcher. Are you ready to "go to work in Rotary"?

Today, we also had another nice event; Nancy King became a Paul Harris
Fellow. Nancy, we congratulate you on your latest accomplishment.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Dave O'Connell is looking for a few good "painters" (or willing
Rotarians), to participate in our next community project, Paint up Delray.
The event is April 12. Call Dave before all the paint brushes are taken! His
number is: 391-4970

Ernie Simon, we are so glad to see you back with us, after vacationing a week
at Bethesda Hospital (flat on his back). Good health!

Rel Moorcroft had the winning ticket to draw from our "green hat." Since he
did not draw the winning ace, the pot is about $425.00 to $450.00 by now.

For those of you that took the time to attend our Bingo Party Fundraiser, I
thank you. For those who helped with the event, I really thank you. After
all, it is not about "playing bingo," it's about attending a Rotary Club
Fundraiser; the reason we are in Rotary; to help others.

Ernie Simon, Program Chairperson, had the pleasure of introducing his law
partner, and our current mayor, David Schmidt. David has been on city
commission for six years; as commissioner for three years; mayor for three
years. Because of term limits, Mayor Schmidt will be leaving office at the
end of March. He has served us well. We thank you for all your dedication
to our little "village by the sea." (There's always next year.)

Mayor Schmidt addressed us with the "State of the City" speech. He had his
invaluable aid, Nancy King, running the (slide) show. He gave us the six
most important goals for Vision 2007:
1. Community Unity
2. Expanded Downtown from I-95 to A1A.
3. Quality Neighborhoods Where People Want to Live
4. Expanded/Diversified Local Economy
5. Quality Education Opportunities
6. Top Quality Services Valued by Citizens.

He expounded on each of these, showing what has already taken place, and
things to come! Again, David, we thank you, and our commissioners.
