ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 1, 2003

President Pat Archer presided over yet another fantastic meeting. Jimmy
Weatherspoon gave the invocation, and also led us in song. Bruce Williams,
we salute you for your beautiful musical renditions; Steve Bates donated
money in your honor.

Egon and Elsie Kurz are celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary; he
donated $20.00 in honor of this. Art NeJame donated $31.00 in honor of his
and Fatima's 31st anniversary. We congratulate all of you and wish you many,
many more.

Harvey Brown had the pleasure of greeting six visiting Rotarians. We must
say good-bye to Macey Gordon and Rev. Andy Hall until next season. We will
miss you and wish you a lovely summer.

Jim Blocker paid for and presented our banner to Frank Hamilton, of
Plattsburg, NY. We had make ups done by Jim Blocker, Gerry Meeks, Ernie
Simon and Barnie Shuhi. We thank each of you for caring enough to do these
make ups.

Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected $150.00+, thanks to Dr. Styperek.
(He likes rounded numbers.) Lyn Huckle, Mike Zen and John Arnold, each
donated $5.00 to the fund.

Leo Phillips wants to remind us of our commitment to Polio Plus. Next week,
he will be giving us an update on our status.

Marilyn Ochs advised us of our two representatives from Atlantic High School
to RYLA. They are Kelly Tubbs and Kyle Klein. Perhaps she will give us an
update on this at a meeting soon.

Dave O'Connell needs a couple more volunteers for upcoming Paint Up Delray,
on April 12. You may call him at: 391-4970. This will only take about four
hours to complete.

Next Tuesday, 7:30 a. m. will be our next Rotary Board Meeting. It is held
at Ellie's Diner, in the Marilyn Room. Members are invited to attend; learn
more about our club. Also, your input is welcome.

Steve Bates is looking for volunteers to work the Delray Affair, April 25,
26, and 27. It is a fun way to work with other members, raising money for
our causes, and to get the message of Rotary out to attendees of the Delray
Affair.

Art NeJame, Program Chairman, had the honor of introducing our guest speaker,
Arnold Drapkin. Mr. Drapkin was a photographer for Time Magazine for forty
years. He was Photography Director for the last four presidential
inaugurations. He comes to Delray Beach and Palm Beach Photographic Centre,
(as a staff member) with high credentials. This gentleman has seen much
history made through the lens of his camera. He has been an integral part of
Fotofusion for its eight years of existence.

Mr. Drapkin dazzled us with pictures (slides) and historical information on
the famous picture Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. He told us about the
photographer, Joe Rosenthal, who took this famous photo. At 90 years plus,
Mr. Rosenthal was honored, in front of the bronze statue, made from his
famous photo.

He explained to us how there has been confusion over the years about this
famous photo. Yes, there was a first picture taken by Louie Lowery, Marine
Corps Photographer. A commander stated a larger flag was needed for a photo,
so a larger flag was taken from a landing patrol and taken to the top of the
mountain. This is when photographer Joe Rosenthal and a Marine movie
cameraman were onsite to photograph the momentous scene. Not knowing if he
actually had captured the scene as the Marines and one Navy man raised the
flag, he asked for all the group to pose in front of the flag. He then took
another shot, resulting in the "posed picture." So much history flowed
through those eight to ten pictures we viewed, it gave me goose bumps. If
you missed this meeting, you missed a real history lesson!

Next week our guest speaker will be Digby Bridges, a former member of our
Rotary Club. He will be speaking on Interesting Architecture. The following
week we will be graced by Fatima NeJame, speaking on digital camera imaging.
This should be an "eye-opener" for many of us.

On a lighter note; Egon's Extras:
1. A bicycle can't stand alone because it is two-tired!
2. What's the definition of a will? (It's a dead giveaway.)
3. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
(More nonsense later!)
