ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 15, 2003
Well, today is the deadline for mass mailings to IRS. Tomorrow, all the
CPA's can go on vacation!
President Pat Archer presided over today's meeting. Dave O'Connell gave the
invocation; Wally Doud did a terrific job leading the chorus. One of his
choice songs was: Let There Be Peace On Earth (and let it begin with me).
This is a song with such meaning; what a lovely thought! Bruce Williams,
your renditions were lovely.
The real highlight of the day was listening to Rachael Pecaro, age eight,
singing to us. She is a daughter of our member, Sylvia Pecaro. We thank
you, and hope you will sing for us again.
Bill Arnst, we wish you a Happy Birthday; many, many more.
Bruce Wenzel greeted about five visiting Rotarians. We had lots of guests of
Rotarians, also. Georgina Kerr-Jarrett had as her guest again this week,
John Callahan, Director of Delray Library. (Georgina, we hope you can
persuade him to become a member.) Sylvia Pecaro had as her guest, Dr.
Farber. (He revealed he has been in Kiwanis for 65 years. ) Dave O'Connell
had his grandson, David Browne, as his guest. Bill Adams had his wife
Charlotte as his guest today. We welcome each of our visitors, and hope you
will come again. The food is great; the programs are even better!
Bruce commended Arthur Reef and Ernie Simon for doing make ups while "sailing
the high seas." Our banner was paid for by Mike Zinn, a snowbird from
Canada; given to Fred Christie, of Ottawa, Canada.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $146.00. Bill Arnst
donated $24.00 for his birthday. Joyce Lunsford donated on behalf of her new
great granddaughter. Roy Simon donated on behalf of his new grandson. John
Arnold donated five dollars, because he will have the pleasure of holding an
Easter Egg Hunt for all his grandchildren (what a grandpa)!
Dave O'Connell gave us a report on the success of our participation with
"Paint Up Delray." Those Rotarians that helped paint were: David O'Connell,
Dave Armstrong, Roger Cope, and Lyn Huckle. The rest of them were Dave
O'Connell's family: Steve Green, David Browne, and Jason Massaro. We thank
each one of you for the hard work you did, making a family very happy. (For
the rest of you that signed up, what happened to you?)
Steve Bates has asked me to stress to each member that he needs every
member's help with the Delray Affair. If you have not signed up to help in
some way, please do so. If you cannot physically come to the booth to work,
find another way to help out. You can tell your friends where our booth is
located, and ask them to come to us for refreshments. "Help send a kid to
college." Our new Rotary sign has been lettered, and will be hanging on our
booth for the Delray Affair.
Barnie Shuhi gave us her monthly commentary on our Rotarian magazine. She
reminded us that April is Paul Harris' birthday.
Marilyn Ochs gave us a report on the RYLA Seminar. She, her husband, and
about 90 excited youths attend this seminar. We sponsored Kelly Tubbs, and
Delray Sunrise Club sponsored Kyle Kline (both from Atlantic High School).
Marilyn related this was held in Port St. Lucie, Holiday Inn, last Thursday
through Sunday. There were also six youths from the Caymen Islands in
attendance. She told me there were life-long friendships bonded at this
meeting. She was very excited; thank you Marilyn for taking time for such a
worthy project.
Nancy King is very excited that her daughter, Hayley Arp, will be on Fox
network, April 21, 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. for five weeks. (Tune in for details.)
Shirley Clark presented Students and Teachers of the Month, for March and
April. The student for March was Emanna Louis, (unable to attend) and her
teacher was Sgt. Major James E. Peavy, Jr. The honored student for April was
Robert Lalane, and his teacher was Donald Hall. Shirley read some of the
accomplishments of these young people. It is truly amazing how much they
have accomplished in their young life; when do they sleep? It is no wonder
why they chose James Peavy and Donald Hall as their favorite teachers.
Shirley, you did a terrific job; thanks from all of us.
Our speaker for this week was to be Fatima NeJame, lecturing on digital
cameras. Since our program was so extensive today, in all fairness to her,
the attendees voted to have her return next week for her lecture. This gives
us all a second chance to bring our cameras to "class." We all are looking
forward to next week's program!
