ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
April 29, 2002
April has passed so quickly; Delray Affair has come and gone; the snowbirds
are all leaving; hey, let's all go to the beach!
April showers (torrential downpours) played havoc with Delray Affair on
Saturday; however, on Friday and Sunday, those of us who worked had a good
time and feel good about helping to raise funds for scholarships. I do not
know who all worked, nor how much money we raised, but the crew I worked with
on Sunday afternoon were a great bunch of proud Rotarians!
President Pat Archer presided over our meeting today. Nancy King gave a
lovely invocation; Rev. Andy Hall would have been very proud of you. It
sounded so good to our ears to have the lovely music of Bruce Williams back
with us. Bruce, you made our song leader, Jimmy Weatherspoon, sound much
more professional.
We had the pleasure of singing to Uncle Luigi's nephew, Jim Pignato, twice
today. Jim is celebrating his (77th?) birthday, donating $77.00. He and
Frances are also celebrating their 57th anniversary; donating $57.00 to our
club. Jim, we thank you so much for your generosity, and wish you the best.
Bruce Wenzel, before greeting all our visitors, paid tribute to our founder
of the Delray Affair and former president of our Rotary Club, as well as an
outstanding citizen, John Bordman. He gave a brief background on how the
"Affair" was started, and how it has progressed. We certainly have come a
long way! Bruce welcomed five visiting Rotarians. John Arnold presented our
banner to Wendy Loomis, of NY. David VanGorp did six make ups (during the
tax season, he was too busy to attend our noon luncheons). David, we thank
you for being a faithful Rotarian.
Ernie Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected a whopping $262.00 today. First,
Jim Pignato donated his birthday and anniversary money. Jim then donated
$1.00 on behalf of Cliff Ripley being on TV. Well, this started the ball
rolling. Cliff Ripley then donated $50.00 to the club to explain that his
appearance was on behalf of the 25th Annual Scholastic Scholarship Awards,
held yearly at the Breakers Hotel. He thanked our club for donating $500.00
yearly to this fund.
Last week, as most of you know, Leo Phillips won the "Green Hat" by pulling
the ace of spades from the deck. Leo won $600.00; what many of us did not
know, Leo generously donated this amount back to the club. (Guess his hungry
friends will have to buy their own lunch.) Leo, we thank you so much!
Mark Denkler introduced our guest speaker for today, Mercedes Sideregts,
Field Executive for the Girl Scouts, Boca, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach
areas. There are about 8,000 girls in Girl Scouts in this area. Scouting
teaches the girls self-esteem, civic duties and community service, among many
other achievements. Our club donates $500.00 yearly to Girl Scouts; Mark
Denkler presented Mercedes with our annual check today.
Next Week: Our speaker will be Ken Day, manager of Boca Raton Airport. Bring
a friend; this should be an interesting program.
