ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
MAY 6, 2003
President Pat Archer presided over our meeting today; Hack Allen offered the
invocation. We had the pleasure of the duet of "Jimmy and Wally" leading our
singing. Of course, we had the melodic sounds of Bruce Williams on piano.
We had three birthdays being celebrated today: Ernie Simon, donating $78.00;
Dave Armstrong, donating $20.00; and Dave O'Connell, donating $69.00. We
thank each of you and wish you a very Happy Birthday!
Harvey Brown greeted the visiting Rotarians (2), Lou Cucci had his brother
Nick with him; Jim Blocker had his parents with him; Bruce Galloway had his
friend, Joe Black, with him. We had a great group today.
Doing make ups were David Van Gorp, Sylvia Pecaro, Art Reef and Tom Cook.
We thank each of you and especially Tom who took the time to do seven make
ups. ( I think he was comparing the food with ours.)
Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report, stating the Dow was up 68 points;
S&P up 9 points; NASDAQ up 28 points. He was eagerly awaiting the Fed
Meeting today.
Fred Bonardi served as Sergeant at Arms, collecting a whopping $264.00.
(Thanks to the birthday boys.) John Arnold donated $10.00; Wally Doud
donated $5.00 to tell us good-bye for the summer; Lyn Huckle donated the
banner today. (By the way, Lyn looked great; must be a new hairdo!)
Ken Davis, who is a member of the Boca Noon Wednesday Rotary Club, visited us
today, distributing flyers about his project, raising funds for Cat Island
Orphanage. Last year, Ken visited us, to invite us to his club's first
Hootenanny, to raise funds; they raised $20,000 and Rotary matched funds,
resulting in $64,000. His flyer informed us of all the great things they
were able to do with this money. This year, they hope to do the same! This
year, the Hootenanny will be held at the Griddle Restaurant, 475 NE Spanish
River Blvd., Boca. Date: June 28, 2003; food, entertainment; price: $30.00
per person.
Mark Denkler introduced our guest speaker today, Ken Day, Manager of Boca
Airport. Mr. Day had with him, Bill Schwartz, who is on the Aviation
Advisory Board. One of our members, Harvey Brown, who is an avid pilot, is
also on one of the airport boards.
Probably the most important to area residents is noise issues. Mr. Day noted
that about 85% of the aircraft flying in and out of Boca Airport is Stage
Three (quieter aircraft). They try to keep from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. a no
fly time. There is a seven member board composed of State of Florida, Palm
Beach County and city of Boca Raton residents to analyze and control noise
issues. Mr. Day brought it to our attention that from Key West to PBI is an
extremely busy corridor.
New and better equipment is being developed and implemented all along. He
also states that educating the public to noise pollution is the key to
problematic issues. He was very interesting; answered many questions for the
attendees.
NOTICE: Being published for membership is Robert J. Erickson, Photo
Instructor Boca High Night School and John Callahan, III, Director of Delray
Beach Library.
REMINDER: Board of Directors Meeting, Tuesday, May 13, 7:30, a.m., Ellie's
Marilyn Room (between diner and Flamingo Room). All members are cordially,
and encouraged, to attend these meetings.
