ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 13, 2003
As I start the Ramblings this week, I must make a correction to last week's
newsletter; Wally Doud donated $20.00 to the club, not $5.00, as I stated.
(He really had guilt feelings about leaving us all summer, huh? Sorry, Wally,
have a great summer.)
President-elect, Mark Denkler did a fine job presiding over the meeting.
Jim Pignato gave a lovely invocation; Gerry Meeks led the singing. Bruce
Williams sure made it all sound better.
We had two birthdays; Fred Runkel, donated $80.00, and Cliff Ripley donated
$20.00. We wish you both the very best.
Gerry Meeks, doing double duty, welcomed the visitors. Among them was Dorian
Trauger; welcome. (Who is this Tom Cook; a visitor?) Rel Moorcroft paid for
the banner. We want to welcome Rich Connell back; good to see you!
We must say good-bye to three of our faithful members, for the summer: Con
Fecher, John Arnold and Bill Talen. Have a great summer.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report. At the time, he reported: "the
dollar is weak; market is good."
Tony Allerton collected $225.00 today, as Sergeant at Arms. He sure did some
great "arm twisting."
Next week we will be inducting two new members: Robert J. Erickson and John
Callahan, III. Let's all be at the meeting to welcome these two new members.
Steve Bates introduced our Student of the Month, Jennifer Shersky, of
Atlantic High School. She hopes to become a successful elementary school
teacher. She will be attending FAU. Her achievements and activities
certainly surpass her young age! She is quite an active young lady with all
her extracurricular activities and community service. She even finds time to
work part-time.
Jennifer chose as her Teacher of the Month, Chris Wotton. "Coach" Wotton is
an ever popular teacher; winning this award for the fourth time at our club
since 1996. He teaches English, as well as coaching swim teams and boys
volleyball. Both Jennifer and Coach Wotton are high achievers and very
deserving of our awards.
Dave Armstrong, one of our members finally had his "day in court!" (Excuse
me, at our podium.) Dave is an attorney; specializing in estate planning.
His practice is Chapin, Armstrong and Ballerano, on George Bush Boulevard.
Dave was born in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. (This accounts for his unusual
dialect.) He is a grad of Dartmouth and NW Chicago Law School. Then he
moved to FL and went to U. of Miami. He practiced there until 1997, moving
to Delray. He is the proud father of four boys. Dave, thank you for sharing
your life with us.
Rich Connell not only returned today, he also presented our guest speaker,
Walter Bond, Ocean Rescue EMT; one of his employees. Walter is originally
from Austria. He is a very enthusiastic person, enjoying his job very much.
He brought us up to date on all the renourishment of our beach and info on
where the new restrooms and parking is for the beach. Not only does the
beach have a new look; the Parks and Recreation has bought two new ATV's and
new radios, for better communication and efficiency for our patrols. Walter
added that Bill Adams' sons have worked the beach patrol. Then he found out
that Roy Simon's son Mike, had worked with them. He added that Coach Chris
Wotton, of Atlantic High is a former colleague also. He answered many
questions and gave lots of useful beach info to the audience. We thank you
for all the information and enjoyed the enthusiasm.
NEXT WEEK: Our guest speaker will be Brent Winams, of Community Foundation.
