ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 20, 2003
Our president has returned! President Pat Archer looked well rested after a
much needed vacation.
Harvey Brown gave the invocation; Jimmy Weatherspoon led the singing. We
always appreciate the lovely music of Bruce Williams.
Bruce Wenzel had an easy job today; he had no visitors to welcome. All the
snowbirds have flown north; we are all settled in for a fun summer. We thank
those who did make ups; Jim Blocker, Diane Pecheco and Hume Rennick. George
Kientzy paid for a banner, but had no one to give it to.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report. Of course, as you know, it
changes moment by moment. At noon, it was up for the year!
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected $90.00. Among this was a $25.00
donation from Bill Scottie, paying us to escape for the summer. Bill,
thanks, and have a great summer.
Today, Emmett Gumm had the pleasure of inducting two new members into our
club. They are Robert Erickson (who was wearing a Rotary shirt; he is a
former member of another club) and John Callahan, III. Robert teaches
photography in an evening school. John is the director of our Delray Beach
Library. I hope we can hear more about these men in the coming weeks. We
welcome both of you into the Rotary Club of Delray Beach; "where the rubber
meets the road!"
David Armstrong had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker, Shannon
Sadler, President and Chief Executive Officer of Community Foundation for
Palm Beach and Martin Counties. She has served in this capacity for
twenty-three years.
As most of you know, our own member Ernie Simon, through the efforts of the
board of governors of the Delray Beach Playhouse, has created the Ernest G.
Simon Scholarship Fund. This fund assists individuals who live in the
general service area of the playhouse and are enrolled in a theater education
or training program at a university, college, or other special training
program.
Ms. Sadler complimented Delray Beach for its "sense of community." She gave
each of us a copy of the foundation's Annual Report. It shows how wonderful
it is to see how the "haves are helping the have nots." This very personable
lady is doing a great job; we wish her continued success in helping to
balance life's needs in this area, where it certainly is two extremes.
