ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
May 27, 2003
Here's hoping all of you enjoyed a nice Memorial Day weekend, and that you
took the time to remember what it is all about.
President Pat Archer presided; Leo Phillips gave a lovely, meaningful
invocation. It was brought to our attention that our song leader, Jimmy
Weatherspoon, is also a celebrity, with his picture in the newspaper.
A special thank you goes out to Bruce Williams, for his lovely music each
week. It was announced, to a large round of applause, that Bruce will not be
going away this summer; we will get to hear his music every week. Thanks, Bruce.
We wish Nancy King and Steve Bates Happy Birthday. Nancy's birthday is
actually today (27); Steve's is on Saturday (31). Between them, they donated
$104.00; someone do the math! Since Steve was in a generous mood, he paid for the
banner, but had no one to present it to.
Fred Bonardi gave a very encouraging stock market report; unlike in the past
few months. He noted the market is moving; highest in six months.
We had make ups by Nancy Owens, Nancy King, Pat Archer and Lyn Huckle.
Tony Allerton, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $156.00. This included
Lyn Huckle's donations of $10.00, for having her family visiting her. With
her was her grandson, Chris, who donated $5.00, for visiting with us.
Fred Runkel had the pleasure of drawing a card from the deck; but not the Ace
of Spades. The "green hat is growing." The total is now over $156.00.
Ernie Simon read a resolution, honoring the late Alexander Ronald Wills. Mr.
Wills had been a member of our club since 1970, being very active in the
club, and a Paul Harris Fellow. A copy of the resolution will be sent to Bette,
his widow. Our condolences go out to his family.
Art NeJame had the pleasure of introducing our guest speaker(s), Joan
Goldberg, Palm Beach County - Art in Public Places, and Carolyn Pendelton-Parker,
Landscape Architect with Sanchez & Maddux, Inc. Ms. Goldberg introduced Ms.
Pendelton-Parker, who entertained us with a lovely slideshow. It entailed lovely
landscape architecture, from centuries ago, to our ultramodern landscape. She
informed us there are three types of landscape architecture: Commemorative
Art; Public Art; Integrative Public Art (Architectural). I overheard that
Delray Beach will be looking forward to enjoying some of this lovely landscape
architecture in the near future, around Old School Square. We are looking forward
to this.
Next week, Rich Connell will be introducing our guest speaker. If I can coax
him to reveal his speaker, I will send you a memo. Also, next week, we will
have a mystery "leader." Be there!
