ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 10, 2003

A group of fifteen Rotarians of Delray Beach Club started their day with a
7:30 a.m. board meeting. Much is accomplished at these meetings; if you want to
know who is really dedicated to this club, please attend.

Our President, Pat Archer, was back with us this week to preside over our
meeting. Our invocation was eloquently given by Gerry Meeks. Jimmy Weatherspoon
always makes us happy, leading the singing. Of course, Bruce Williams always
sets the mood with his beautiful music.

Ernie Simon greeted our guest, Janet Meeks, who was guest of Lula Butler.
She reminded us of our July 4th celebration, with the Sand Sculpture Contest (at
the beach, of course, and sponsored by Delray Sunrise Rotary) and a parade
through town. We had make ups done by Diane Pacheco and Bill Arnst. We thank
both of you for taking the time to do the make ups. For those of you AWOL's,
check with Diane and Bill, they can tell you where to do make ups.

Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave us a very positive stock market report. At the
time of her report, the Dow was up 44 points; the S&P up 4 points; the NASDAQ up
9 points. "The economy is on the rise!"

Pat Archer read two letters; the Girl Scouts thanked us for our contribution;
the Community Pantry thanked us for donating seven boxes of hot dogs
(leftovers from Delray Affair, due to rain) to The Caring Kitchen. For those of you
that may not know, Jim Pignato paid for these. Jim, we thank you for your
generosity.

Rich Connell, Sergeant at Arms, collected $100.00 today, including a generous
gift from Ron Backer, in honor of his and Barbara's nineteenth anniversary.
Happy Anniversary to both of you, and many more happy, healthy years together.

Mr. "Whatever" (Lew Currier) held the winning ticket to draw for the green
hat winnings; since he did not win, the proceeds exceed $150.00 now.

Leo Phillips gave us the percentage of contributors to Polio Plus, thus far.
60% of you have not made this commitment as yet. Come on guys, let's do our
part to stamp out Polio. Do you not remember how debilitating this dreaded
disease really is? There was discussion regarding our goal internationally.
After speaking with Rotary International, Leo was informed we have exceeded our
goal on pledges, not actual collected funds. This pledge, of course, includes
our club's commitment of $100.00 per year, per member, for two years. I hope
each of you will respond, even with weekly contributions, to this extremely
important cause. (Rel will keep a running tab on your contributions, right
Rel?)

Rich Connell, Program Chairperson, introduced a dynamic duo, as our speakers
today. They were Ian Plosker, a teenager with much on the ball, who serves as
President of Youth Council of 505 Teen Center, and Mike Borton, Director of
505 Teen Center. This center is located on S. Federal Highway, in the Women's
Club of Delray Beach. This is a City of Delray Beach Parks and Recreation
facility. Lula Butler is on the board of this Youth Council, as well as other
local dignitaries. Ian is a very enthusiastic young man, who presents his
passion for this project well.

The vision of 505 Teen Center is a safe facility open to all community teens
for recreation while helping them develop a positive self-image, enthusiastic
attitude, greater self-awareness, and constructive peer interaction.

Mr. Borton invited us to come visit 505 Teen Center, and I did! I felt that
if I were going to write about it, I needed to know more about it. As I
entered the building, I was greeted by Mike Borton, who was playing pool with the
young men. I observed a group of teenagers in a clean, orderly environment.
There are about five computers available. A group of them were outside playing
basketball. I also saw where they are constructing a 10,000 square foot
skate park. I am certain there will be much competition among them going on when
the skate park is done. I was quite impressed, and feel you would be also.

They hope to have more tutors, mentoring and future scholarships available to
these young people of Delray Beach. Our hats are off to Mike Borton, Ian
Plosker and the Youth Council.

NEXT WEEK: Our guest speaker will be Taryn Wheat, of the Community Child Care
Center. She will be receiving our annual donation to the Center also. This
is certainly a great facility; be there to learn more about it.
