ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
June 17, 2003

Today was President Pat Archer's last official meeting. She will be away
with family next week, on a well deserved vacation. Under her leadership, our
club has gained great strides this year. Jim Blocker has agreed to post the
Rotary Club of Delray Beach Accomplishments 2002-2003 on our website. For those
of you that are eager to learn all we've done, go to: delraybeachrotary.org.

Ron Backer gave a lovely invocation; Jim Weatherspoon gave us our spelling
lesson with R-O-T-A-R-Y, That spells Rotary! He is so enthusiastic, he makes us
all Smile! As always, Bruce Williams makes our entrance into Ellie's
Flamingo Room so special with his lovely, welcoming music.

Pat and David Archer are celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary. She
donated $10.00 for the occasion. Lyn Huckle, celebrating her first year in our
Rotary Club, donated $20.00.

Harvey Brown, who was supposed to welcome all visiting Rotarians, did not;
there were none! (First time I can recall.) Make ups were done by Nancy Owens
and Bill Talen; we thank you both.

Georgian Kerr-Jarrett giving the stock market report, likened it to a
"see-saw;" noting the economy is recovering.

Steve Bates had the honor of introducing three of our scholarship recipients
today: Stephanie Bollenbacher, attending FAU; Jennifer Shersty, attending FAU;
and Katherine Killian, attending PBCC. President Archer read thank you notes
from two other scholarship recipients: Anna Berlanga and Shane Weatherspoon
(Jimmy's her proud uncle). Our club presented 10 students from Atlantic High
School with scholarships this year. I certainly hope we get to meet more of
the recipients in upcoming weeks.

Roy Simon, Sergeant at Arms, gathered in $110.00 today. Anne Bright who is
going away for the summer, donated $20.00, just so we would let her go.

President Archer reminded the club of our commitment of $100.00 per member,
for two years, to meet the Polio Eradication by 2005. Polio Plus is a large
commitment, but we, as individuals, can make a difference in world health.

Vice-president "Fire Marshall Bill" Adams had the honor of introducing our
guest speaker today, Taryn Wheat. Taryn is Director of Development at Community
Child Care Center. She is a native of Florida, and our area. She is no
stranger to many of us; the Wheat name being well known in our area. Taryn is
among only seven in our state to hold the coveted Certificate of Fundraising
Executives.

At CCCC, there is a staff of 46, and cares for 300 children. These are at
risk children of abuse, abandonment and neglect. They are from homes of poverty
levels, with income of $12,000 or less, for families.
Their ages range from 12 months to 14 years.

Some months ago, our Rotary Club held its Board of Directors meeting at the
facility at 7:00 a.m. We were served the nutritious breakfast that each of
these children are fed. (They are also fed lunch and dinner.) We went on a tour
of the facility. If you are in need of a hug, this is the place to go. These
children are taught to love and learn. The parents can go to their jobs,
knowing their children are receiving quality care.

When questioned, Taryn told us there is a waiting list of 1,500 children for
this wonderful quality care center. Payment from the parents is on a sliding
scale; all must pay something. They are also funded by government, state and
local; United Way, private funds and civic organizations like our Rotary Club
of Delray Beach. At the conclusion of her presentation, Bill Adams and Pat
Archer presented Ms. Wheat with our $500.00 contribution for the year. As most
of you know, our own Anne Bright certainly takes an active part in CCCC. For
those of you looking for a good volunteer service, go read to a kid; the
rewards are overwhelming!

Barnie Shuhi gave her monthly report from the Rotary Magazine.

REMINDER: Our club will meet next Tuesday at Delray Beach Golf Course Club,
on Highland Avenue (off Homewood Ave), at noon, for our annual installation of
officers and luncheon; be there!
