ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 1, 2003

HOW TO BATHE A CAT:
1. Thoroughly clean the toilet.
2. Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water, and lift both
    lids.
3. Take the cat and soothe him while you carry him toward the bathroom.
4. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids.
You may need to stand on the lid so that he cannot escape. Caution:
Do not get any part of your body too close to the edge, as his paws will be
reaching out for anything they can find.
5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power wash and
rinse" that I have found to be quite effective.
6. Have someone open the door to the outside and ensure that there are
no people between the toilet and the outside door.
7 . Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.
8. The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet and run outside, where
he will dry himself.
     Sincerely,
     THE DOG

No, this obviously ain't Ms. Ellie. At last report, she was participating in
a Tango Marathon in the parking lot of the "Hotel Boynton," (often referred
to by the locals as "HOBO,") in beautiful downtown Boynton Beach. (They gotta'
downtown?)

President Mark Denkler, better observed sitting than standing, as when
standing, a thin veil or Cirro-Stratos tends to form around the upper four inches of
his head. However, today, he wasn't here so Past President Pat Archer filled
in for him. (We are told he is attending a "Shoe Show." Think we should
give him the boot?) He promises crisply run meetings and old favorites from our
song leader. Maestro Williams, (not John - the other one) tinkled the ivories
as Steve Rich led the wailing. Dave O'Conner gave the invocation.

Sergeant at Arms Fred Bonardi twisted a few arms for $92.00, and Fred also
gave the market report. Visitors were introduced by Harvey Brown, and Lew
Currier donated the banner. Harvard Q. Brown informed this scribe that all divorces
were caused by marriage. So that's it!
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Fred Bonardi, Lula Butler, Bruce Williams, Dave O'Connell,
Gerry Meeks and Tony Allerton were given certificates for Service Above Self.
Curt Steward was eulogized by Ernie Simon. Ernie thanked Pat Archer for her
year of presidential service to our club.

For the flick-nicks, I'd recommend "Whale Rider," filmed in New Zealand and
concerning the indigenous people, the Maori. It combines heartbreak, great
hopes and a tad of fantasy.

Former President "Bingo Gene" Webb sends greetings from Canton County, North
Carolina. Gene is head chef (what else?) at a local nursing home. Wife Bunny
is a bookkeeper for a local business. All the hillside homes Gene built are
leased for the season and he is contemplating acquiring more land and building
more cabins. Good to hear from them. Many of you will remember the Rotary
Cookouts at Wright By The Sea when Bunny and Gene managed that facility.

These pages would be slighted without a mention of the predictable Chicken
(installation) Lunch at the Delray Beach Golf Club. Actually, the food was
good, but allow this scribbler to ask a question: Why would we move from Ellie's
Bountiful Spread with four entrees, sides, salads, soup, fruit cups and an
assortment of pies? It's like leaving a Caddy with all the bells and whistles for
a two door stick shift Chevy Cavalier. I eat at the golf club when I can see
a menu.

President-elect Bill Adams introduced our speaker today. Fire Lieutenant Hal
Knabb is a member of Delray's Fire Department. His subject was Community
Education and Outreach. His list of accomplishments is awesome. Hal's slide
presentation involved a nine week program for the Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT). He provided a Mission Statement and an organization chart. The
department is not just dedicated to putting out fires. Fire safety ranks high
in importance. Numerous outreach programs are in place. Civilians of all
ages and backgrounds are involved in this technology and people oriented
programs. Makes a boy proud. Thanks Hal. Thanks, Bill.

Our Ms. Ellie is looking for a new Nancy Jackson. Nancy was a very capable
backup Ramblings scribe, as you will recall. When the moon is right Ms. Ellie
puts on the safari outfit replete with pith helmet and pithtol and gets out of
Dodge (Delray) for a little white water rafting on the intracoastal.

Current Reading: (30 pages and rest the eyes) is old companion Tony
Hillerman and "The Sinister Pig." He writes about a favorite part of my world, Sante
Fe, Four Corners and Two Tribal Reservation Policemen. Harry Potter, all 800
pages (30 and rest eyes) will probably keep me going well into 2004.

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in a
lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the
manager came out of his office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked
as they moved off. "Because," the manager said, "I can't stand chess nuts
boasting in an open foyer."

Next week's scribe: Ms. Ellie
This week's scribe: F. Ida Knowed
Next week's program: Proctology as a Contact Sport, featuring a slide
presentation with Professor Egon Kurz.

Actually, next week's program will be: Nancy King and students that visited
our "Sister City Myiazu, Japan."
