ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 15, 2003
Our favorite tall, tall Texan, President Mark Denkler led a fine meeting
today, and got us all "out on time" as promised he would do. Our scheduled
speaker had a death in her family; funeral was today. Her replacement reneged at
the last minute. Thus, the early departure from the meeting.
Gerry Meeks gave the invocation; Jimmy Weatherspoon, after borrowing
someone's eyeglasses, led the singing. (I think the prescription was wrong, however.)
Oh well, Jimmy, you are such a good sport! Bruce Williams, as always,
charmed us with his music.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report, stating not much is going on in
the market today; yesterday was good. He stated Greenspan commented he will
leave rates low as long as needed.
This is the second publishing for Jon Simon as member.
Sergeant at Arms, Ernie Simon, gave us a good report; he collected a total of
$86.00. The majority of collections today were for the "Get Well, Rel" Fund.
Lyn Huckle contributed $10.00 to wish Rel well; Georgina Kerr-Jarrett
contributed $5.00.
The Green Hat ticket today was held by Ernie Simon; even with help, he did
not win the pot, which is now well over $225.00.
Since we did not have a formal program, President Mark Denkler introduced two
of our scholarship recipients. First, we had Tucker Abbott who is one of
this year's recipients. Tucker told the group he will be attending Georgia Tech,
hoping to become an Aerospace Engineer. He graciously thanked us for playing
a role in his education.
Then, J. R. Crowel, a recipient from last year, told us a little bit about
his first year at Tulane. Mark Denkler read a blurb on J. R., stating he was
named Conference USA Freshman of the Year; Conference USA All Freshman Team;
Named to Louisville Slugger's Freshmen All-American Baseball Team, by Collegiate
Baseball Magazine; Co-Freshman of the Year-2003 All Louisiana Team by
Louisiana Sports Writers Assoc. He led Tulane team in strikeouts with 73. He became
Tulane's #1 starter on the mound the last month of the season. Can anyone
tell what this young man would like to do for his career? He also thanked our
club for our participation in making his education dreams come true. This
athlete is one to watch!
Lou Cucci informed the group of our upcoming Rotary Summer Social. It will
be held on August 21, 2003, 7-10 p.m. It will be held at Ellie's Flamingo Room
(where else can we get such good food)? The price will be $35.00, with a
delectable menu. Music will be by DJ, Sir-dance-alot (Pete Sansom); a good ol'
Englishman, with lots of wit! He has quite a repertoire of music; so ask for
your favorites. If you love to dance, wear your dancin' shoes; bring a
partner. Sir-dance-alot is former president of Square Dance Caller's. He is also an
accomplished ballroom dancer (along with his wife, June). He holds dance
parties around the area weekly. Come, join us for a night of fun, on August 21.
Some quotes of Yogi Berra:
"Baseball is 90% mental; the other half is physical."
"If people don't want to come out to the ball park, nobody's gonna stop'em."
"There's nothing like a home opener, whether it's at home or on the road."
For a spring training drill, Yogi instructed his players to "pair off in
threes."
His most famous quote: "It ain't over 'til it's over."
President-elect Bill Adams is looking for good speakers for our weekly
meetings. Please give Bill some input for speakers. If you've heard a good one
speak lately, tell him. If you don't help him, don't complain with who we get!
Thanks for your help.
