ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 22, 2003
In the absence of our president, our President-elect, Bill Adams presided
over the meeting. Bill is getting good practice for his term! Our beautiful
invocation was given by Tony Allerton. Jimmy Weatherspoon led the singing, while
Bruce Williams accompanied on piano. (Hope all attendees were listening to
his lovely renditions, before the meeting started.)
Ken and Susan Peltzie are celebrating their 39th anniversary; he donated
$39.00 to the club in honor of this. Thanks, Ken; many more happy years together.
Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report. At time of his report, the market
was up 65 points.
Sergeant at Arms Roy Simon collected a total of $105.00. That is very good
for a hot July day, don't you think? Jim Pignato holding the winning card, but
no winner, bumped the green hat up over $240.00 at this time.
President Betsy Owen, of the Rotary Sunrise Club of Delray, graced us with
her presence today. She also told us briefly of her wonderful trip to
Australia. Since she is retired (from teaching), she will spend lots of time being as
good a president of her club as she knows how. Please come again.
REMINDER: SUMMER SOCIAL; August 21 (Thursday), 7-10 PM; Ellie's Flamingo
Room. We have invited Sunrise and Boynton-Lantana Rotary Clubs to attend with us.
In attendance will be our District Governor for this year. We will have
open bar; hors d'oeuvres; fine entree choices; entertainment by DJ Sir Dancealot,
a well known DJ and dancer, around South Florida (and many other parts of the
world, i.e., London). The price is only $35.00 for all this. For
reservations: Lou Cucci 561-330-8445, or Mark Denkler 561-276-6570. Bring a friend,
neighbor, or even a stranger! Let them learn more about Rotary; we are a great
bunch!
Our guest speaker today was no stranger to any of us; it was Top Gun, Ace
Pilot, Lt. Harvey L. Brown, Sr., Retired. Harvey has really had an interesting
life, for a kid from Delray Beach.
Harvey flew a Sabre Jet on 63 missions, during the Korean War (by President
Truman's standards, "Police Action.") This began in February 1953. As of July
27, 2003, this will be 50 years ago. This "Police Action" lasted 37 months,
causing the deaths of 36,914, and wounding 103,000 Americans. They estimate
about four million Koreans died in this "Cold War."
Harvey brought along pictures of himself, sitting in the cockpit of his Sabre
Jet, with his name and hometown (Delray Beach) painted on the side of it. An
informed source tells me that Harvey's personal plane today, carries the same
ID numbers: FU350. By the way, if I did not know better, I would think the
pictures were actually Harvey L. Brown, Jr., the kid with a full head of red
hair!
Harvey, we certainly enjoyed your presentation; hope you will return with
this program in the winter, when we have a larger audience to enjoy and get to
know more about one of our hometown heroes!
Next Week: Our speaker will be Juanita Bryant, of The Caring Kitchen.
UPDATE ON REL: I just spoke with Regie; Rel is in JFK Hospital, awaiting
still another procedure. On Thursday, 24, he is scheduled to have a Defibrillator
installed. For those of you wondering; it is an electronic device that
applies electric shock to restore rhythm of a fibrillating heart. All tests
indicated he is a candidate for it; this is a precautionary measure, in addition to
his pacemaker. If all goes as well as expected, Rel will be going home on
Friday afternoon. Remember Rel in your prayers.
