ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
July 29, 2003
On another sun-drenched July day in Paradise (spelled Delray Beach), our
Rotary Club met for another hour of feasting, praying, singing, enjoying other
Rotarians company, and being informed of what is happening in Delray Beach! With
this, we, as Rotarians, make a difference in other people's lives.
President-elect Bill Adams sure did a terrific job leading the meeting. He
pledges to allow Georgina Kerr-Jarrett to have the same privilege next year,
when he is president and she is president-elect.
Gerry Meeks led the singing, (with a little arm twisting). Em Gumm had a
lovely invocation prepared. Roy Simon and Beth are celebrating 42 years of
marriage; we thank you for your contribution, and wish you many more happy years
together.
Bruce Wenzel welcomed one visiting Rotarian, the "Island Boy," Jeffrey
Dennis, of Nassau, Bahamas. Our make ups were outstanding: Nancy King, Nancy Owens,
Emmett Gumm, Bill Talen and George Kientzy (4'xs). We refrain from
mentioning a few AWOL's.
Fred Bonardi reported a fairly "quiet day" on the stock market. Fred also
was Sergeant at Arms today, hauling in $80.00. Pat Archer, holding the winning
green hat ticket, did not draw the Ace of Spades. Our winnings now exceed
$250.00. (Ann Bright, it appears we are awaiting your return to have a winner.)
Bill Adams told us a bit about the six visiting GSE Group from the
Netherlands, coming in September. Lyn Huckle and Georgina Kerr-Jarrett will be hosting
two of the visitors. Bill also gave us an update on our Exchange Student, to
arrive soon; she now has her Visa.
President-elect Adams introduced one of our honor scholarship recipients from
Atlantic High School. She is Samantha Meggison. "Sam" is a quiet, bright
young lady, who has a multitude of hobbies, including sketching, and is a
computer whiz. She will be attending Honors College at UCF, where she will be in
the marching band, as well as studying law, and a minor in Spanish.
Bill Adams then introduced our guest speaker for the day. She is certainly
no stranger to most of us; Juanita Bryant, Director of Caring Kitchen. Besides
her other degrees, she holds a degree in Theology, and is an ordained
Methodist Clergy. She is associated with CROS Ministries. This organization works
with people of all faiths, coming together to help the less fortunate. Twenty
years ago, these churches and synagogues formed the Emergency Food Pantry,
serving about 8,300 people in this area; with 46% of these being children.
The Caring Kitchen serves approximately 220 people daily with hot meals,
serving 7,400 meals per month. They now have the "After School Snack Program."
They try to address issues; create self-esteem. Many, many people out there,
in our city, are struggling to make ends meet. Volunteers are needed to serve
in many capacities. The central kitchen is in the American Legion Hall, where
they graciously rent the facility for $1.00.
The Rotary Club of Boynton Beach-Lantana is having their Second Annual
Invitational Golf Tournament, Friday, August 22, 2003, at Cypress Creek Country
Club. For those interested, contact Mack Stephenson, 561-964-1915.
Reminder: Rotary Club of Delray Beach Summer Social, Thursday, August 21,
2003, Ellie's Flamingo Room, 7-10 p.m. Lou Cucci needs commitments ASAP. Our
local Rotary Clubs are invited, plus non-Rotarians. Our special guest will be
our District Governor. We need you to contact Lou at: 561-330-8445. You will
enjoy a wonderful meal and musical entertainment; all for only $35.00.
I spoke with Rel Moorcroft this evening; he feels he is improving, but has
"good and bad days." Today was a "bad" day. Rel needs your prayers and also a
call, or a note.
Next Week:
Our speaker will be from the Morikami Museum and Gardens, Delray's pride and
joy.
