ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB DELRAY BEACH
August 5, 2003
Welcome back, to our President Mark Denkler. Now, he can settle down and
lead a great year. We will be looking forward to having Mark as speaker, telling
about his trip to Australia. It was certainly nice to see Joyce Lunsford
greeting everyone at the front door.
Lula Butler gave a lovely invocation, and exemplifies what a true Rotarian
is. Jimmy Weatherspoon, in his usual jovial mood, led the group in singing. As
always, Bruce Williams entertained us royally.
We had three anniversaries today. Dr. Janus Styperek, (not knowing how many
years) donated $50.00; Jim and Barbara Blocker have been married seven
wonderful years, thus a $7.00 donation; John and Carole Callahan have been married 34
years, thus his $34.00 donation. We wish each of you many, many happy years.
(Dr. Styperek, we know you know; thanks for your generous donation.)
Harvey Brown greeted our visitors today. Among the visiting Rotarians were
Dorian Trauger and her club president, Laurie Nagelbush, Boynton-Lantana Rotary
Club. Lyn Huckle introduced her friends, Dr. Gregory D. Albert and his
lovely wife Laina. We welcome each of you and hope you will come again.
We want to thank those who took the time to do make ups: Lula Butler, George
Kientzy, Hume Rennick, Dave Harden, Nancy King and Bob Erickson. (We won't
name the AWOL's this time.)
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett did a terrific job as Sergeant at Arms. (Should we
keep her full-time?) She collected $167.00 for the day. She also gave the stock
market report, indicating the economy is good; the bond market is moving!
Our big category today, again was "Get Well, Rel."
President Denkler introduced our guest speaker for the day; Larry Rosensweig,
Director at Morikami Museum. Most of you recognize Mr. Rosensweig, and the
name, since we gave his son Clark one of our scholarships in the past. Clark
is at Harvard, studying hard.
Mr. Rosensweig has been with Morikami for twenty-seven years, even when it
was in planning stages. He had the fortune of being a Rotary Exchange Student
to Japan as a young man. His love for Japanese Culture makes his job perfect
for him.
The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is the largest in the U. S., and
ranks number six in the world (outside Japan). This is really an honor. For
those of you that have not visited this lovely, peaceful setting, I strongly
suggest you take the time to do so. You will come away refreshed.
As most of you know, the land was donated to Delray Beach by a migrant
Japanese, Mr. George Morikami, who came to the US in 1906, as part of the Yamato
Colony.
This weekend is the Bon Festival at the Morikami, Saturday, August 9, 5-9
p.m. The entertainment will include: Toro Nagashi lantern floating, honoring the
lives lost in the Columbia shuttle explosion and recognizing the lives of
soldiers lost in recent war activities; Ennichi Street Fair Games & Shop Booths;
Taiko Drummers (my favorite); Folk Dancers and Ghost Stories; Food and
Fireworks. The admission is: $10.00 adults; $5.00 children, 3-12. For more
information: 561-495-0233, or www.morikami.org.
REMINDER: Our SUMMER SOCIAL! Thursday, August 21, 2003; Ellie's Flamingo
Room; 7-10 p.m. There will be cocktails, dinner and dancing. All this for the
price of $35.00; what a deal! Lou Cucci will be accepting your ticket money
and reservations next week. We will have the Sunrise and Boynton-Lantana Clubs
in attendance also. Our special attendee will be our new District Governor,
Rick Russell. Emmett, tell him to bring his "dancin' shoes." We are all
looking forward to a great evening. Hope you will attend, and bring friends. The
restaurant needs to know the attendance, so please respond by August 12.
I just spoke with Rel. He says he is improving a bit daily. Of course, it
is a "slow go" for him. Please keep him in your prayers. Jess Sowards is
doing a terrific job in Rel's absence, but sure hopes he gets back...soon!
