ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
August 26, 2003
I will start the Ramblin's with a great big thank you to Nancy King, who so
graciously accepted writing the newsletter while I went on vacation. Some have
asked if I enjoyed my vacation; the truth is, if I had enjoyed it any more I
would have never come home!
For those of you who missed our Summer Social last Thursday evening, you
really missed a great time. As our special guest, we were honored to have our
current District Governor, Rick Russell and his lovely wife with us. We ate;
(some) drank; some of us (almost) danced our feet off! It was a night of good
clean fun! Georgina now has a new avocation!
It was good to see our president, Mark Denkler back. Our condolences go out
to Mark, LaRhonda and family in the loss of her mother.
President Denkler presided over our meeting. Ernie Simon gave a lovely
invocation, thanking God for the wonderful sportsmanship displayed by our National
Champions Baseball Team, from Boynton Beach. These young children showed the
nation, and the world, what sportsmanship is all about. We salute them!
Jimmy Weatherspoon followed, leading us in "Take Me Out To The Ballgame." I would
be remiss if I did not mention the wonderful music from Bruce Williams.
Harvey Brown welcomed two visiting Rotarians, Betsy Owen, president of Rotary
Club of Sunrise, and Frank Hunter, Rotary of Hollywood Club. Mickey Manning
presented our banner to Mr. Hunter. We had Mert Anderson doing a make up at
the Breakers. (How do they compare, Mert?)
Georgina Kerr-Jarrett gave the stock report. Today, she did quite a "dance
routine," since the market is down. She stated consumer confidence and durable
goods is up, however.
On September 12, Rotary Club of Sunrise will be hosting our GSE Group from
the Netherlands at their 7:15 a.m. meeting. This should be an interesting
group. The group will be unable to attend our Tuesday meeting, so, if you want to
meet them, please attend the a.m. meeting. Georgina Kerr-Jarrett and Lyn
Huckle will be hosting some of the group in their homes.
Sergeant at Arms, Candace Etzler gathered in $68.00, even though we had no
special occasions. I think most of the money went into the "Get Well Rel"
category.
This is the second publication for membership of Curt Godfrey, owner of Bob's
Printing Company. Curt has been visiting with us; we welcome you Curt.
Also, the board of directors voted on two more new prospective members:
Daniel Wise and Dario Day, co-owners of Credit CPR Group. This is the first
publication for them.
Today, our guest speaker was Barbara Poleo, co-owner of Past Perfect Florida
History, Inc., of Boynton Beach. She is a wealth of information on the
history of Florida. For those of us who love history, and particularly Florida
History, we found her extremely knowledgeable and interesting. Somehow, I feel
she was only able to scratch the surface, due to lack of time. She also carried
with her, a Plat Map made in 1849, of the state of Florida. (There wasn't
too much on it, folks.) She also had a railroad timetable dated November 1907,
of the East Coast Railroad. It had some strange phrases on it.
Ms. Poleo elaborated on James Ingram, who worked for Henry Flagler. He did
exploring, surveying, and was an excellent photographer. He was very important
to the development of South Florida.
She briefly referred to the "Barefoot Mailman," noting he charged $5.00 to
anyone that wished to accompany him on his barefoot journey from Jupiter to
Miami, to deliver mail. (I guess you might say he was a travel agent, in his own
right.)
Ms. Poleo stated her books are Florida books, written by Florida authors.
They are history, fiction, nature, children's, travel, biography, cookbooks and
more. For more information: 742-7822, (Boynton Beach) or: <A HREF="www.past-perfect-florida-history-books.com">

I just spoke with Regie, Rel's wife. She stated that Rel is in Coronary
Intensive Care (in Indiana). Tests were made, and his Coumadin level was too
high. More lab work is being done before a new procedure is to be performed.
Regie is renting a furnished apartment, awaiting Rel's recovery. After 7:30 p.m.
(CST) she may be reached at: (317)-879-7224. I will try to keep all posted;
please continue your prayers for Rel.
Smiles for Today:
The more you complain, the longer God lets you live.
Few women admit their age; few men act it.
We have enough youth; how about a Fountain of "Smart?"
