ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
September 2, 2003

President Mark Denkler presided over our meeting; President-elect Bill Adams
followed with a moment of silence for our beloved Rel Moorcroft. As most of
you know, Rel passed away last Friday, August 29, in Indianapolis, IN. His
family is having a funeral for him there this week. When Regie returns to Delray
Beach, she will have a memorial service here. In lieu of flowers, the family
has requested if you wish, memorial contributions may be made to First
Presbyterian Church, (Gleason St.) or Rotary Club of Delray Beach. Our club will
never be the same without "Mr. Rotary."

Steve Rich led our singing today, while Bruce Williams made us sound so good!
We sang Happy Anniversary to Leo Phillips and also to Fred Runkel. Leo
donated $20.00 and Fred donated $30.00; thank you and may you have many more happy
years with your lovely "brides."

Uncle Luigi's nephew was official visitor greeter today, (sometimes known as
Jim Pignato). He informed us that we had many of our members doing make ups.
Among them are: Lula Butler, Nancy Owens, Lew Currier, Hume Rennick, George
Kientzy, John Arnold, Bill Talen, etc. Some of these made multiple make ups.
We thank each of you for being so dedicated to Rotary! Ray Ripley tried to
give away a banner, but no one was there for it.

Sergeant at Arms Tony Allerton collected $158.00 today. The majority was in
memory of Rel, with Jim Blocker and Lyn Huckle generously donating $10.00
each. Steve Bates held the winning ticket to draw a card from the deck; sorry, no
winner!

The social for the GSE Team will be held Thursday, September 11, 2003, from
4:00 to 8:00 p. m, at 2150 S. Ocean Blvd. It will be a cookout, with President
(Rotary Sunrise) Betsy Owen heading up the menu. (I will follow up with more
specific information as soon as possible.) We hope many of our members will
attend; the nominal cost is only $10.00.

Today, our guest speaker was none other than "Coach" Howard Schnellenberger,
of the "Fighting Owls" Football Team, of FAU. This is only the second year
they have been playing. They went to Middle TN University this past week and
"whomped 'em" 20-19. Middle TN University is a Division I team; look what it
did for FAU; it put them in 24th position in the nation! He attributes the win
to the great physical condition our home boys are in.

This season, the Owls will be playing at Lockhart Stadium, located at Cypress
Creek and Commercial. This is much closer to home; is a 22,000 seat stadium
and parking is only $5.00. He noted they will continue to play there until
they become a Division I Team, which should be around 2005-2006. Coach
introduced Athletic Director, Craig W. Angelos. who is doing a great job marketing the
team and school. He noted there are many good buys for season tickets. He
also introduced "mother-to-be," Maribeth Bates, Assistant Athletic Director,
External Relations. For further information: 561-297-4434, 297-2001. As a
closing remark, Coach Schnellenberger ended with "gotta go practice football!"

Next Week: It is with pleasure that we present our own Dr. Janus Styperek as
our guest speaker. You will want to be there to hear Dr. Styperek tell about
his recent trip abroad.
