ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
September 30, 2003
Looks like autumn is arriving, one snowbird at a time! I spotted a couple of
them today. Seems Canada is beginning to get a bit cool. We are looking
forward to seeing all our friends who flee South Florida in summer. (Don't tell
them how nice it really is.)
President Mark Denkler presided over another well done meeting. Steve Bates
gave a very patriotic invocation; something we must all agree on. Poor Jim
Weatherspoon "weathered" another meeting, leading the singing acappella. You
know, no matter how many tomatoes we throw at him, he is such a good sport, and
makes the singing session fun. Bruce, we really need you back, to keep us on
key!
Harvey Brown, whom we all are happy to see recuperated, welcomed our
visitors. We welcome you back, Harvey. Shirley Clark brought her "boss" Michael Cody
with her. (I hear he enjoyed our club.) Bob Erickson brought Ally Stahl as
his guest. We had make ups done by Lula Butler, Dave Harden, Bill Arnst,
Harvey Brown and (?).
We were elated to see our friend and member, Fred Bonardi back and looking
great. Fred, the best of health to you. Now, give us a good stock market
report. As he was reporting, the market was down. For the year, however, the Dow
is up 12%; The NASDAQ is up 35%; and the S&P is up 14%. Fred also collected
$60.00 serving as Sergeant at Arms. This total included Harvey Brown's
contribution of $10.00 for his birthday (?) and Fred's "happy to be back" $5.00.
President Denkler announced: Sunday, October 12, our first District Barbecue;
Quietwaters Park. Glen Estes, our Rotary International President for next
year, will be in attendance. It isn't often we get to meet our RI President;
this should be a terrific outing. The price is $20.00 for adults; children
$10.00. Please prepare to make a commitment to President Denkler next week. I
will give directions then.
At this time, I would like to thank Jim Pignato for his lovely eulogy of our
beloved Rel Moorcroft at his memorial service. First, Jim explained to the
people the ideals of Rotary and what it is all about. Then, he proceeded to
tell the people how Rel Moorcroft uplifted these ideals and meant so much to the
people of Delray Beach Rotary Club. Dear friend, Rel, you are so missed; we
loved you so.
Bill Adams introduced our speakers for today, Todd Shuart, Executive Director
and Beverly Johnson, Activities Director of the DeVos-Blum Family YMCA of
Boynton Beach. By the way, Mr. Shuart is a member of Rotary Club of
Boynton-Lantana.
There are 2,400 YMCA's in the U.S. They are also in 130 countries. This is
why everyone knows about the "Y." This location is at Old Boynton Beach Road
and Military Trail. It is a lovely facility. It boasts a fitness center, with
personal trainers, aerobics; a gym with basket ball leagues; two indoor pools,
for family and fitness swimming. They also certify lifeguards and scuba
divers. The YMCA has the largest childcare facilities in the U. S. for 2 1/2 to 5
year olds. It also has an after school program. They promote community
wellness, including massage therapy and medical management. They encourage
seniors to become active and stay active.
We were all invited to visit the facility with a VIP Guest Pass. Each of us
were given a programs guide for Fall/Winter 2003. No excuses; some of our
members are on the board of directors there; look how active they are!
Next week: Our guest speaker will be Gareth Fowles. Gareth is a former GSE
exchange to the Netherlands. He will be telling us his experiences along with
a slide presentation. He is now Director of Alumni Affairs at Lynn
University.
The following dialogue is from one of our famous writers, solely for the
purpose of lifting the spirits of our own Harvey Brown. Harvey, this one's for
you:
"Here we are reporting for the Delray Beach Rotary Ramblings, in the parking
lot behind Bellys Diner and we have as our interview guest this morning,
Harvard Q. Brown, bon vivant, raconteur, cat fancier, and international traveler.
Tell me Mr. Brown...
"Call me "Q."
Very well, Q. Call me Flash. How did you first discover that you were ill?
"As I recall, I suspected something was wrong when one of the members of our
vacation group asked how much it would cost to buy insurance, in case she
swallowed a tongue depressor during an exam. My head was spinning. My dream was
about to be realized. Then, it hit me. I became quite dizzy. I'm told I
began to recite Teddy Kennedy's answers from the Chappaquidic Trial. Next thing
I knew, I was in an English hospital listening to a French depiction of our
American Revolution. "Eef ve had not comb to your aid dureeng your
revolusheyon, you vood today be speekeeng Engleesh"! They tell me I kept asking, "Is it
the truth?"
Mr. Brown..
"Call me "Q."
Q, during this travail, do you recall what you missed the most; your wife,
your son, the mortgage payments?
"It were the Ramblins. Those pesky reporters; Fungus McBlowhard on
inter-club sports, Blind Bruce, Boynton's answer to crossing a six lane road on red,
and, of course, the editor.
How about next year Q? Two years in a row it's been overseas and out!
"Lantana is very nice in August!"
