ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 7, 2003
President Mark Denkler, in timely manner, presided over yet another
outstanding meeting. Hack Allen gave the invocation. Gerry Meeks, as well as the rest
of us, was blessed to have Bruce Williams back to help him keep in tune, as
he led the singing. (Guess Jimmy Weatherspoon didn't want to face another week
of acappella.)
Bruce Wenzel gave a warm welcome to our two visiting Rotarians. Bob Erickson
presented his guest, Haley Stahl, and Pat Archer presented her guest Bhavana.
Bhavana is a teacher visiting from India. She has dedicated her life to
educating the people of India. Each year, our club sends support to this region,
called Auroville Universal Township. From time to time, she will be sending
us a newsletter. I will forward this information to the club.
We had make ups done by John Arnold; John it's time to return to South
Florida! We had way too many AWOL's.
Fred Bonardi, looking great, gave a positive stock market report. He did say
the dollar is weak, but the market was stable at noon.
Candace Etzler gave the Sergeant at Arms report, collecting a total of
$111.00, after having a pin check. Hey guys, better wear your pin every meeting.
Dave Armstrong gave $5.00 to let us know he has moved his practice to 4600
North Ocean Blvd., BB. Roy Simon gave $5.00 to announce the birth of his second
granddaughter (4th grandchild), Solenne Cecilia. He is a mighty proud grandpa.
REMINDER: This coming Sunday, October 12, 2003, 1:00 p. m to 5:00 p.m., at
Quiet Waters Park, will be The First Annual Family of Rotary Day, for Districts
6930 and 6990, and their families. Our featured guest will be Glenn Estess,
Sr., President of Rotary International 2004-2005. It is rare that most of us
have the privilege of meeting our RI; let's all try to attend. It will be a
barbecue and all the trimmin's. In advance, the tickets are $20.00 adults,
$10.00 children over age 10; day of event: $25.00 and $12.50. Directions to Quiet
Waters Park: I-95 to Hillsboro Exit, go west to Powerline, turn left, go
south about 1/2 mile to entrance of park, veer right and follow signs.
Bill Adams informed us that our exchange student, Latitia, was fortunate
enough to be chosen as one of the Eagle-ettes. This is quite an honor for her.
However, this is a costly project for each girl, so a benefit is being held to
raise money for the girls. It will be held Thursday, October 30, 6-9 p.m. It
will be a Carrabba's Italian Night and Silent Auction, held in AHS Cafeteria.
Ticket pre-sales only; $10.00 adults; $7.00 under age 10. I will remind you
next week also.
Next Week: Board Meeting, Ellie's Marilyn Room, Tuesday, October 14, 7:30
a.m. At noon meeting, Ernie Simon will tell us who our recipient for the Service
Above Self Award is. This will be held November 11, at Old School Square;
put this on your calendar now! Also, next week, our guest speaker will be Susan
Easton, Executive Director of Delray Beach Playhouse.
Our guest speaker for today was introduced by Bill Adams. He is Gareth
Fowles, originally from South Africa. Gareth is Director of Alumni Assoc. at Lynn
University. He holds his MBA from Lynn, where he also played soccer. This
last week, he became a Rotarian, joining Boca Sunrise; congratulations. Mr.
Fowles, in his beautiful "lilting" accent, told us of his experience with the GSE
Program to the Netherlands. He was one of six chosen to participate in this
program. He showed us a few slides of the more than 1,400 pictures taken while
on this trip. This was a "fast and furious" tour. They seemed to cover The
Netherlands in 4 1/2 weeks. The pictures were spectacular. One of the most
interesting was the "waterway bridge" over the highway, with a sailboat going
over. Gareth, thank you for sharing another interesting Rotary experience.
