ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
OCTOBER 14, 2003

The surest sign of "season" approaching is seeing friendly, familiar faces
showing up on Tuesday for our Rotary meeting. Among them today was George
Kientzy, John Arnold and Bill Scottie; more are arriving every day. As we entered
Ellie's Flamingo Room, beautiful sounds of familiar melodies filled the room.
Bruce Williams certainly "served up a bounty" of his renditions.

President Mark Denkler, at the crack of dawn, led a terrific board of
directors meeting; he repeated his performance at noon. Leo Phillips gave a lovely
invocation. Jim Weatherspoon, right on cue, led the happy group in song. We
sang Happy Birthday to Gerry Meeks, who donated $7.30 (does this mean he's 73)?
Anniversaries are: Bill and Barbara Arnst celebrating 29 years (he donated
$29.00); Dave and Nancy O"Connell are celebrating 50 years (he donated $50.00).
We wish you the very best, and thank you for your generous donations. Dave
and Nancy, we especially congratulate you on your Golden Anniversary.

Harvey L. Brown greeted our guests today; including Yann DeFabrique, a
Rotarian from CA; born and raised in Delray Beach. He brought his father as his
guest. Stormi Norem presented Yann with our club banner. We thank Jim Blocker for
doing a make up.

Ernie Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected a whopping $210.30 today. This
included generous gifts from the anniversaries and returning snowbirds.

Fred Bonardi gave the stock market report, telling us the market was down
slightly at noon, but that the market is at a 16 month high.

Ernie Simon also had the pleasure of announcing our Service Above Self Award
recipient for this year: Mr. George Elmore. This honor will be bestowed on
Mr. Elmore on November 11, Old School Square. The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m.
on the front walkway to Old School Square; lunch served in the gym at noon.
Most of you know this well deserved recipient. Next week, I will elaborate
more on this.

Today, Steve Bates had the pleasure of introducing our Student of the Month,
Jared B. McDaniel. Jared's goal is to become a commissioned officer in the
United States Military, and pursue a leadership position in government. (Does
this mean we are looking at a potential president?) With the achievements,
recognition and participation this young has already accomplished, it is entirely
possible. Jared's guests were his parents, Rev. Joe and Rose McDaniel. I
had the pleasure of speaking with these proud parents, following the meeting.
Jared chose as his Teacher of the Month, "Coach" Chris Wotton. Mr. Wotton is
one of the most popular teachers around, winning Teacher of the Month, of our
club numerous times. Year after year, "Coach" is the favorite with the
students. He certainly invests much more than the average teacher in these students.
We congratulate the both of you.

Have you marked your calendar for our Holiday Party on December 5?

Anne Bright, we hope you are feeling better by now; we miss you at Rotary!

Today's speaker was another familiar face to most of the group. Bill Adams
introduced a friend, Cathy Meade, Immediate Past President of Delray Beach
Playhouse. She is a former teacher at Atlantic High School also. She gave us a
full calendar of events happening at the Playhouse for this season. The most
exciting news she gave us however, was the construction of a Children's Theater
on the property east of the existing playhouse. A Cultural Bond Issue gave
$850,000 toward the project. The playhouse is now having a fundraiser to raise
$750,000 more. Construction should start in March 2004, and take nine months
to complete this 160 seat theater. This will serve children of Palm Beach
County. What a plus for Delray Beach!

On October 30, there will be a buffet presented by Carraba's, held at AHS
Cafeteria. Donations for Silent Auction are needed. The proceeds will go to
support our exchange student Luci, who is one of the Eagle-ettes at AHS. Tickets
are $10.00; see Bill Adams.

You don't want to miss next week's meeting. Our guest speaker will be Aurora
Siegl. Aurora was Rotary Club of Delray Beach's International Scholarship
Recipient in 1976. Our club sponsored her to go to Vienna to study music. She
will tell us about her year there, and also play the piano for us. This
should be a real treat for all.
