ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 21, 2003

On another beautiful October day, our club met at noon, led by President Mark
Denkler. Sylvia Pecaro gave a beautiful invocation. Steve Rich led us in
song, accompanied by Bruce Williams.

Bill Adams had his sister, Karen Mathews, as his guest. Since she is
celebrating her birthday, Bill gave $40.00 in her honor. (We all think he overpaid.)
We congratulate Jess and Judy Sowards on their ninth anniversary.

Harvey Brown welcomed no visiting Rotarians. However, Candace Etzler did
have Holly Stahl as her guest. Nancy Owens did a make up; thanks. Cliff Ripley
paid for a banner he could not give away.

Fred Bonardi informed us that the stock market is slightly down today, but
for the year, the Dow is up 17%; the NASDAQ up 44% and S&P up 18%. I guess a
"little down" is acceptable.

Ernie Simon, Sergeant at Arms, collected a total of $148.00. Among this was
a generous donation of $30.00 from returning member Cliff Ripley.

President Denkler announced that for the next two weeks, the club will be
filling "shoe boxes" for a project sponsored by the Delray Sunrise Club, sending
supplies to the Bahamian children. Bring office supplies and toiletries to
fill the shoe boxes. Mark has a large supply of them!

Bill Adams announced the upcoming event at AHS Cafeteria on October 30, 6:00
p.m., to support the Eagle-ettes, which includes our own exchange student,
Latitia. It is sponsored by Carabas; the tickets are only $10.00. See Bill for
tickets; only a few left. We must all support this young lady; she is "ours."
About 60% of the ticket sales help to sponsor the trips the girls will take
this year; they are an outstanding group.

Today, Bill Adams had the pleasure of introducing as guest speaker, a friend
to many of us. She is a friend to Bill and his sister, Karen. She is a
friend to Ernie Simon, as he sponsored her as our Exchange Student in 1978-79;
Cliff Ripley, who has held the Scholastic Scholarship Awards at the Breakers many,
many years, was proud to announce she was a recipient at this awards in 1978;
she is a dear friend of mine also. She is Aurora Siegl; so aptly named; "a
ray of light." She was dressed in the native costume of Vienna, called dirndl
(girl costume).

Our club sponsored Aurora as Exchange Student to Vienna in 1978-79, to study
music. At that time, over 100 students had applied for this scholarship. She
had to appear before a board in Miami; was chosen there. Ernie Simon was so
proud; still is!

Aurora is a first generation American; her parents are from Vienna. Her
grandfather was a composer there. She felt quite "at home" while studying music
there. She was able to meet many other such students from all parts of the
world with the same interests; attend 40 opera performances and other cultural
plays. She formed lifelong relationships with these people. They meet and
correspond often.

Aurora has experienced a promising career with IBM, in the Corporate
Education Department. She worked on how to prepare a product for overseas market.
She developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, forcing her into retirement. (Aurora,
this gives you more time for your music and your favorite hobby, jewelry
making.)

She shared her Rotary experience with all of us; an experience of a lifetime.

In ending the program, Aurora entertained all of us with excerpts from Bach,
Schubert and Ernie! She has written music for many of Ernie Simon's events.
They collaborate; he writes words; she writes his music. Have you never heard
of Simon and Siegl? (Or is it Siegl and Simon?) However it is, Aurora and
Ernie, thanks for a delightful, entertaining program!

ANNOUNCEMENTS: November 11, Old School Square, 11:30 a.m. Service Above Self
Awards; front walkway. Lunch will be served immediately following ceremony,
in gym. Our recipient is George Elmore, owner of Hardrives, and many other
endeavors, including many civic honors. More about Mr. Elmore and his
achievements upcoming (promise).

Holiday Party, December 5, Delray Golf Course. Dinner and dancing, with live
band. We will share this party with Delray Sunrise Club. Make your
reservations early!
