ROTARY RAMBLINGS
ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH
October 28, 2003
We welcomed back Anne Bright (looking great); and Wally Doud has migrated
south. It was good to see both of them. They were also glad to be back,
donating $5.00 each. We might also give "honorable mention" to Bruce Galloway who
looked "dapper" in his Halloween "get up." He was the bravest in the crowd.
(Wonder what he will wear Friday, 31st!)
President Mark Denkler ran a smooth meeting today. He is requesting that we
not forget to bring school supplies and toiletries to the meeting next week,
for the children in the Bahamas. He has a big shoe box to fill. Next week is
definitely the deadline on this. If you have supplies, please bring them.
Jim Pignato gave a lovely invocation. Jim Weatherspoon led the singing, not
giving up until we sounded great! Bruce Williams gave his usual lovely
renditions on piano.
We had three birthdays: Bruce Wenzel, donating a whopping $76.00; Jon Simon,
donating $25.00; Bill Harvey, donating $20.00. We wish each of you a very,
very Happy Birthday, and thank you for your generous donations.
Harvey Brown greeted visiting Rotarians Oswald Wertz and Terry Johnson.
George Kientzy had as his guest, John Valance. Doing make ups were Nancy Owens,
Mert Anderson, Tom Cook and Pat Archer. We thank each of you for "caring
enough to do your best." Bill Scottie paid for a banner that he did not give away.
It was a good day for Fred Bonardi; he had a good stock market report. The
DOW was up 58 points; NASDAQ up 20 points; and the S&P up 5 points. For Fred,
it was a good day.
Joyce Lunsford paid to read a joke sent to her by Dr. Don Thorpe. He
threatened to return soon. (Actually, we are looking forward to his return.)
Tony Allerton gathered in $234.00 today, with the many generous donations, as
mentioned. Tony also in charge of the "green hat," turned over nearly
$300.00 to Fred Runkel, who drew the Ace of Spades from the deck! Congratulations
Fred!
REMINDERS: Tuesday, November 11, at 11:30 a.m.; meet at front entrance to
Old School Square. This is our yearly Service Above Self Award ceremony. This
year, as you know, our recipient will be George Elmore. At noon, we will move
to the gym for lunch, catered by Ellie's Diner. This, as always, is an
exciting event. We look forward to honoring Mr. Elmore for the good works he has
done in our community. All the former recipients will be our special guests at
this event. Don't let the guests outnumber the members; be there!
Friday, December 5, Holiday Party! This is our annual holiday party.
Tickets go on sale next week. Let's all get our commitments made for this event. I
can promise you, you will have a great time.
Bill Adams introduced our guest speaker, Gay Rogers, Executive Director of
The Wellness Community, Southeast Florida. This organization was founded
twenty-two years ago in Santa Monica, by Harold Benjamin. The Southeast Florida
chapter was founded by Sue Spurber, about six years ago. It is located at 3998
FAU Boulevard, Suite 120, Boca Raton. This nonprofit organization offers
Wellness Workshops, Education, and Hope to cancer patients and those who care for
and about them. One in three people are affected by cancer, at this time. The
workshops help people to relate and recover.
Ms. Rogers handed out a brochure showing the upcoming calendar of events for
November and December. All these workshops are complimentary; they depend on
donations for support. For more information: 955-9551.
Next week: Our guest speaker will be Kevin Cooney, FAU Baseball Coach.
Yea, Marlins!
